Setup guide

From installation to your first conversion

Specify an output folder, add the files to convert and select "Start Encoding" to begin. There is no server to set up, no web console to configure and no commands to enter.

Queue and jobs

Queue

The list of files queued for conversion. Files you add are placed in the queue as Waiting and are converted in order.

Job

A single conversion in the queue. Each file becomes one job, and progress, remaining time and results are shown for each job.

1 First time only

Installing NyXGridEncode

Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. You can choose to download the external tools and register the Windows service during installation. To install from the ZIP instead, extract it and put the folder wherever you like.

2 First time only

Downloading the external tools

For licensing reasons, the external tools are not bundled; they are downloaded directly from each publisher. With the installer, you can download them during installation. If you installed from the ZIP, download them after launch from External Tools on the Tools menu. If FFmpeg is not found, the External Tools window opens automatically after the main window appears.

Only FFmpeg is required. NVEncC, QSVEncC and VCEEncC are used for GPU encoding; without them, encoding runs on the CPU. libVLC is used in the Adjust window, and without it the Adjust window (crop, trim and subtitle style) is not available.

The External Tools list shows whether each tool is required, its status, the installed version and the latest version from the publisher. Select "Download" to get or update tools.
3 Optional

Registering as a Windows service

To keep encoding while no one is signed in or while the window is closed, register NyXGridEncode as a Windows service. You can select this during installation, or register later from the Service page in Settings. You are prompted for administrator approval when you register.

Registration requires FFmpeg, so do this after downloading the external tools. When you register from Settings, the window closes and the service starts.

Specifying the output folder

Specify the folder where converted files are saved. Type the path into "Output Folder" at the top of the window, or choose a folder with "Browse". Files you add yourself cannot be converted until an output folder is specified.

If a file of the same name already exists, a sequential number is appended to the end of the file name.

5 Optional

Selecting a preset

Select the preset to use from the preset list at the top of the main window. Five presets are provided for common purposes, and you can edit them or add your own in "Edit Presets".

Each file's preset is set at the moment the file is added. To use more than one preset, switch presets before you add the files, or right-click the job afterwards and change its preset from the "Preset" submenu.

Setting GPUs and parallel jobs

GPUs detected at startup are enabled automatically with the default number of parallel jobs. If you need to change this, open the Encoding page in Settings, where you can choose which GPUs are used and set the parallel jobs for each one. Without a license key, one GPU is used at a time.

The Benchmark page in Settings measures and recommends a suitable number of parallel jobs.

Adding files

Drag the files or folders you want to convert onto the window, or use "Add Files" or "Add Folder". When you add a folder, the videos in it are added, including those in subfolders.

Starting the conversion

Select "Start Encoding" at the top of the main window, then select "Waiting only" in the confirmation window. Jobs are assigned according to the parallel job settings.

During conversion, the window shows the progress and remaining time of each file, and the estimated completion time and remaining time of the whole run. Double-click a job to show its real-time log (double-clicking the Audio or Subtitles column opens track selection instead).

For details on each function and setting, see the User manual.

Automatic control during a run

A run is designed to keep going without stopping for input, so you do not need to watch the window while it runs.

Automatic completion time estimate

The estimated completion time and the remaining time are calculated from the progress of the running jobs and shown in the status bar, so you can see whether the run will finish by a given time.

Protecting source files and existing output

Conversion never modifies the source files, and by default they stay where they are. If a file of the same name exists in the output folder, a sequential number is appended so that no existing file is overwritten.

CPU fallback

Jobs whose settings the GPU cannot handle are processed on the CPU automatically through CPU fallback. Every CPU fallback is recorded both in the on-screen list and in the log. The main conditions are listed in the table below.

Resuming unfinished files

The queue is saved automatically. Select "Start Encoding" at the next launch to continue with the unfinished files. Any file that was mid-conversion when the run stopped is converted again from the start.

No confirmation dialogs

No confirmation dialogs requiring a response are shown during conversion. If a job fails, the run moves on to the next one; failures appear as red rows in the list and as a count at the bottom of the window.

Sleep prevention

By default, the PC is kept from going to sleep while encoding is in progress. You can turn this off in the settings. The display is still allowed to turn off.

CPU fallback conditions

Assigned to the CPU before conversion
  • Codecs the GPU has no encoder for. VP8, MPEG-4 Part 2 (Xvid), WMV 8 and Theora use the CPU. VP9 and MPEG-2 are supported only by Intel GPUs, so they use the CPU on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs.
  • Settings that exceed the resolution limit of NVIDIA GPUs: more than 4096 pixels on a side for H.264, or more than 8192 pixels on a side for HEVC and AV1.
  • Carrying image-based subtitles such as PGS over into a different container.
  • A codec that the GPU has been found unable to encode since NyXGridEncode started. It is checked again after a restart.
Retried once on the CPU after a GPU failure
  • The GPU session limit has been reached.
  • The GPU returns a "not supported" error.
  • A failure whose cause cannot be identified.
Not covered by CPU fallback
  • A corrupted input file, an output folder that cannot be written to, insufficient disk space or a missing external tool. Processing on the CPU would not resolve these, so CPU fallback does not apply.

Overwriting, moving and deleting

  • When you re-encode a completed job from the right-click menu, the previous output is replaced only if you select "Overwrite" in the confirmation dialog. Selecting "Create with a new name" writes the output with a sequential number instead.
  • Source files are moved or deleted after a successful conversion only if "Move to the processed folder", "Move to the Recycle Bin" or "Delete" is selected under "Source File After Encoding" in folder watch. The default is "Leave in place", and a warning is shown when an irreversible choice is saved.

Behavior when resuming

  • The queue is saved automatically each time a file completes, after folder watch imports files, when a run ends and when NyXGridEncode exits.
  • By default, a run does not resume automatically at startup. If the previous run was interrupted, the number of restored items appears at the bottom of the window. Select "Start Encoding" to resume.
  • Completed files are not converted again. For a file that was being converted when the run was interrupted, the partial output is discarded and the file is converted again from the beginning.
  • If a forced shutdown or power loss leaves a partial file in the output folder, the next run overwrites it and writes the output again under the same name.
  • Unless NyXGridEncode is registered as a Windows service, exiting it interrupts the conversion in progress. If "Minimize to tray" is on, the close button does not exit NyXGridEncode and conversion continues.
