Before you install, check that your PC meets the system requirements in 1.2.
NyXGridEncode is Windows software for converting a stored collection of videos to another format in batches. It encodes the videos in the queue one after another with the settings you specify. You do not need to do anything else until all of them are finished.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 11 (64-bit) |
| GPU | Not required. With an NVIDIA GeForce, Intel Arc or integrated graphics, or AMD Radeon GPU, encoding runs on the GPU and takes less time than on the CPU. Without a GPU, encoding runs on the CPU. |
| Disk | The application itself (the full set of program files) is about 70 MB. If you download all of the external tools, they use about 1.1 GB after extraction. You also need free space for the output files and the temporary files created during encoding. If free space in the output folder falls below 5 GB, no new encoding starts. During a run, free space is checked each time an item finishes; if it is below this limit, the run stops and the running items return to "Waiting". If free space in the output folder or the temporary folder falls below 15 GB, a warning appears in the status bar (encoding continues). |
| Network | Used to download the external tools, verify the license, check for updates to the product and the external tools, and send inquiries from "Support". Distributed encoding communicates with PCs on the LAN. Encoding itself works offline. |
| External tools | FFmpeg is required. Add NVEncC / QSVEncC / VCEEncC to use a GPU, and libVLC to use "Adjust". All of them can be downloaded with an installer option or from within this product (2.1, 2.2). |
This manual uses the following four types of boxes for supplementary information. If you are short on time, read the red and orange boxes first.
The following notation is used. Monospaced text such as C:\Program Files\NyXGridEncode\tools indicates a file path or a command,
and notation such as Delete indicates a key on the keyboard.
Text displayed on the screen is enclosed in double quotation marks, as in "Start Encoding". Click a screenshot to view it at full size, and press Esc to close it.
Setup consists of three tasks: installing the application, downloading the external tools, and registering a license key. If you download the external tools with an installer option, you can skip 2.2. You can encode without registering a license key (2.4).
Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. The default installation folder is C:\Program Files\NyXGridEncode.
nyxgridencode-1.1.0-setup.exe. The number in the file name is the version.
If a prompt for administrator permission appears, select "Yes".Program Files;
if you specify any other location, "NyXGridEncode cannot be installed in this folder." is displayed and you cannot continue.| Option | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Do not download external tools | - | Does not download external tools. Download them after startup from "Tools > External Tools" (2.2). |
| Download only the required FFmpeg | Selected | Downloads only FFmpeg, which is required. |
| Download everything, including GPU encoders and libVLC | - | Downloads all of FFmpeg, NVEncC, QSVEncC, VCEEncC, and libVLC. |
| Register as a Windows service | Off | Registers and starts the service. Encoding continues while no one is logged on (Chapter 12). Registration requires FFmpeg. When the mode is not "Agent", it also requires a Standard or higher license (2.4). In a new installation, the mode is "Standalone" and no license key is registered, so "Could not register the service." is displayed and the service is not registered. In that case, register a license key after starting the product, and then register the service on the "Service" page of Settings. |
| Create a desktop shortcut | On | Creates a shortcut on the desktop. A Start menu shortcut is always created. |
You can also use the product without the installer by extracting the ZIP file (portable setup).
For version 1.1.0, the ZIP file is named nyxgridencode-1.1.0.zip and contains the NyXGridEncode-1.1.0-win-x64 folder.
Place this folder anywhere you like, and run NyXGridEncode.exe in that folder.
In this case, settings and logs are created inside that folder, so you can carry it on a USB flash drive.
If you register the product as a Windows service, check the permissions on the folder (12.1).
The folder in the ZIP file and the installation folder contain the following files. The installation folder also contains uninstall.exe, which uninstalls the product.
| File or folder | Description |
|---|---|
| NyXGridEncode.exe | The executable of this product. |
| NyXHelper.exe | A helper program of this product. Do not delete it. |
| readme.txt / readme-en.txt | Plain-text readme files (Japanese / English). |
| usermanual.html / usermanual-en.html | This manual (Japanese / English). Open it from "Help > Manual". |
| THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt | License notices for the open-source software included in this product. Do not delete it. |
| tools\ | The folder where the external tools are placed. It is empty in the ZIP file. |
Program Files, settings, the queue, and logs are stored in C:\ProgramData\NyXGridEncode.
In any other location (portable setup), they are stored in the same folder as the executable. If that folder is not writable, C:\ProgramData\NyXGridEncode is used.
Settings, the queue, and logs are not stored in the per-user AppData folder, because when the product runs as a service,
the service and the window must read the same settings file. In both setups, the external tools are placed in the tools folder in the same location as the executable.
For details, see Appendix A.When you start the product, a startup screen appears first. Wait a few seconds while the product checks the external tools and detects GPUs.
If the required FFmpeg is not installed, the message "A required external tool is not installed: FFmpeg" appears, and then the window for downloading external tools opens. To open it later, select "Tools > External Tools" from the menu.
| Tool | Requirement | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | Required | Reads media info, detects black bars, and encodes on the CPU. This product cannot work without it. |
| NVEncC | Optional | Encoding on NVIDIA GPUs. Download it if your PC has a GeForce or Quadro GPU. |
| QSVEncC | Optional | Encoding on Intel GPUs. Download it if your PC has an Arc GPU or the integrated graphics of a Core processor. |
| VCEEncC | Optional | Encoding on AMD GPUs. Download it if your PC has a Radeon GPU. |
| libVLC | Optional | Used to play videos in the "Adjust" window. If it is not installed, "Adjust" cannot be used. |
tools folder, where the tools are installed, in File Explorer.avcodec-*.dll) to read input,
so place all of the files extracted from the package in the tools folder.
If any of the DLLs is missing, this product treats the tool as "Not installed" and does not use it for GPU encoding.
This problem does not occur if you use the product's download function.Open "Help > License" from the menu.
Register an add-on license key with the same steps after you register the main license key (13.4). For how to apply for a trial license and its conditions, see 13.6.
Even without a registered license key, all encoding functions are available, and the number of parallel jobs is not limited. Only the following eight items are restricted.
| Item | Unregistered | Registered |
|---|---|---|
| Items in the queue at one time | 20 items | The number shown for "Jobs Allowed" in the "License" window ("Unlimited" if there is no limit). The same limit applies to queue import (5.7) |
| GPUs used at the same time | 1 GPU | The number shown for "Multi-GPU" in the same window |
| Folder Watch | Not available | Available when "Folder Watch" shows "Available" |
| Sharing work among multiple PCs | Not available | Up to the number of PCs shown for "Agent" |
| External notifications | Not available | Available when "Agent" shows a value other than "Unavailable" (8.6.1) |
| Wake-on-LAN | Not available | Available when "Agent" shows a value other than "Unavailable" (11.5) |
| Registering and restarting the Windows service | Not available | Available when "Folder Watch" shows "Available". Also available without a registered license key when the mode is "Agent" (12.1) |
| Auto shutdown when the queue finishes | Not available | Available when "Folder Watch" shows "Available" (8.5.1). When the mode is "Agent", the auto shutdown settings for agents are used (11.5.4) |
Only "Waiting" and "Running" items count toward this limit. Completed and failed items do not. Items that would exceed the limit are not added, and the status bar shows "The limit is 20 items, so N items could not be added. Registering a license raises the limit." after the message that reports how many items were added. While no license is registered, the status bar shows "Running within the free limits. The queue holds up to 20 items." whenever there is no other message to show. This message is not shown when the mode is "Agent". After a trial license expires, this product also runs within these limits (13.6.1).
All everyday operations are done in the main window.
| Area | Description |
|---|---|
| Menu | Six menus: File / Encode / Queue / View / Tools / Help. "Settings" is in the "Tools" menu. |
| Command buttons | Buttons for frequently used operations. The highlighted "Start Encoding" is the primary button of this window. On the right are the preset selector and the "Edit Presets", "Adjust", and "Settings" buttons. |
| Output folder | Where the encoded files are written. You can type the path directly or select it with "Browse". It cannot be changed while encoding is running. Click "Open Output Folder" to open it in File Explorer. |
| Queue list | Shows the files you added and their progress. Click a column header to sort the rows (3.2.2). You can also change the width and order of the columns. |
| Status bar | Has three rows. From top to bottom, the rows show the filters and overall progress, the processing speed and mode, and messages about the last operation. Click the message in the bottom row to open the Log Viewer (you can also open it from "View > Log Viewer"). The Log Viewer shows the activity log and status bar messages since the app started, with the date and time. Use the buttons at the top to filter them by "Errors", "Warnings", "Info", and "Status Bar" (you can select more than one). It shows up to the 5,000 most recent entries and removes the oldest entries when this limit is exceeded. The contents are cleared when the app exits. When the product runs as a Windows service, the Log Viewer shows the activity log of the window app only, not that of the service. Check the activity log of the service in the log files (8.8). |
| Button | Action | Disabled when |
|---|---|---|
| Add Files | Opens a file selection dialog. You can select multiple files. | External tools are missing. The product is running as an agent. |
| Add Folder | Scans the selected folder, including its subfolders, and adds the videos. | External tools are missing. The product is running as an agent. |
| Start Encoding | Starts encoding after a confirmation dialog in which you choose the items to run. While a run is in progress, the button changes to "Stop / Pause"; click it and choose whether to stop or pause the run. While encoding is paused, it changes to "Resume" (5.4). | There are no waiting or completed items, an item has no output folder, external tools are missing, media info is still being retrieved, and so on. Point to the button to see the reason. No reason is shown when there are no waiting or completed items. |
| Retry Failed | Returns all failed items to "Waiting". Does not start encoding. | There are no failed items. The product is running as an agent. |

| Settings | Opens the settings window. | Always available. |
The list has 17 columns. Point to a column header to see a description of that column.
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Status | One of Waiting / Running / CPU Fallback / Completed / Failed. The color of the square at the left end also indicates the status (3.2.1). While encoding is paused, running rows show "Paused" (5.4). |
| File Name | The name of the input file. Long names are shortened with ~ before the extension. Point to the cell to see the full path. |
| Progress | The progress of the item as a percentage. Shown only while the item is running and after it is completed. |
| FPS | The number of frames processed per second. The last value remains after completion, so you can compare speeds later. |
| Elapsed | The time since encoding of the item started. |
| Remaining | The estimated time left for the item, calculated from the current speed. |
| CPU | The CPU usage of the encoding process for the item. |
| GPU VD/3D/VE | Three GPU usage values side by side. From the left, they show decode / rendering / encode. - means that the value could not be measured. On Intel GPUs, the two video engines are shown as VD / VE in that order. Either engine may be doing the encoding. |
| Node | The host processing the item. For completed and failed rows, the host that processed the item last. "Local" is shown when this PC is processing it. - Specified means that you specified where to run the item, and - Transfer means that the file was transferred for processing. |
| Encoder | The encoder actually used. Shows NVENC / QSV / VCE / CPU. |
| Audio, Subtitles | The tracks to output. "Auto" means that the tracks are selected by the preferred language of the preset. "Discard" in the Subtitles column means that the preset is set not to output subtitles. |
| Input Size, Output Size | The file size before and after encoding. While the item is waiting, the output size shows an estimate calculated from the bitrates of the preset and the length of the video. While the item is running, it shows the size written so far, and it becomes final when the item is completed. A size larger than the source file is shown in red. No estimate is shown for modes that do not use the video bitrate, such as CQP, ICQ, and CRF. |
| Preset | The name of the preset applied to the item. |
| Priority | Shows "Priority" for items with the priority mark. Waiting items with the mark run before other waiting items (3.2.3). |
| Notes | What happened to the item. The history of reclaims from agents, reruns, and automatic retries, the reason for the failure on failed rows, and notices such as the reason for switching to the CPU are shown in this order, separated by "|" (11.4.1). If the text does not fit, point to it to see the full text. |
The row appearance described here is for the "Light" theme. Selected rows are shown in the selection color regardless of their status.
| Status | Left marker | Row appearance | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waiting | Gray | Unchanged | The item is waiting to be processed. |
| Running | Light blue | Light green background, green text | The item is being encoded. |
| CPU Fallback | Yellow | Light yellow background, brown text | The item could not be processed on the GPU and is being encoded on the CPU instead. |
| Completed | Green | Light gray background | Encoding finished and the output file was created. |
| Failed | Red | Light red background, red text | The item could not be encoded. To see the cause, double-click the row to open its log. When the failure occurs, a summary of the reason also appears in the status bar. |
Click a column header to sort the rows by that column. Each click switches the order from ascending to descending to the default order. The default order is the queue order: the order in which the items were added, or the order you set by moving them manually (3.2.3). The header of the sorted column shows an arrow that indicates the direction.
The list in "Node Info" can be sorted in the same way (11.4).
The order in which waiting items run depends on the mode and the assignment order (11.2). When the mode is "Standalone", or on a controller whose "Assignment Order" is "List order", waiting items run in queue order. On a controller whose "Assignment Order" is "Efficiency first", larger items are assigned first based on their estimated size. In that case, the queue order applies only among items with the same estimated size.
You can change the queue order with the following operations. Only waiting items can be moved. You can select several items and move them together.
| Operation | Key | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Move to Top | Ctrl+Home | Moves the selected items to the top of the queue. |
| Move Up | Ctrl+Up | Moves the selected items up one position. The "Up" command button does the same. |
| Move Down | Ctrl+Down | Moves the selected items down one position. The "Down" command button does the same. |
| Move to Bottom | Ctrl+End | Moves the selected items to the bottom of the queue. |
| Drag | - | Drag one of the selected rows and release it over the target row. A line shows where the rows will be placed. Release below the last row to move the rows to the bottom. Releasing over a column header or a scroll bar does not move the rows. While you drag, the list scrolls automatically when the pointer is near the top or bottom edge of the list. |
| Prioritize | - | Adds the priority mark to the selected items. If all the selected items already have the mark, the mark is removed. |
The move and priority operations are on the "Queue" menu and on the right-click menu of the list. The changed order and the priority marks are saved and kept when you restart this product. You can also change them while encoding is running. Changes take effect from the next item that starts.
| Row | Contents |
|---|---|
| Top | Five filter buttons such as "All (7)". Each click on "Waiting", "Running", "Completed", or "Failed" selects or clears that button, and you can select more than one at a time. "All" clears all the selections and shows all rows (5.6). When there is at least one failed item, the "Failed" button is shown in red. To the right are the overall progress bar, the start time, the estimated completion time ("ETA"), the elapsed time, and the remaining time. The remaining time is the time left until the ETA and uses the same format as the elapsed time, for example "0d 00:07:09". It is estimated from the combined processing speed of all items, so it may differ from the remaining time shown for each row in the list. When the run finishes, "ETA" changes to "Completed" and shows the date and time the run ended, and the remaining time shows "-". If the window is too narrow, the times wrap to the next line. |
| Middle | Shows the total processing speed (fps) and the CPU and GPU (VD/3D/VE) usage. During distributed encoding, the overall fps including the agents is shown in parentheses. To the right are the mode and the list of nodes that are encoding, each shown as its host name with running/maximum job counts. A disconnected node is marked "(disconnected)". An agent also shows the same list as the controller while it is connected to the controller. Click the speed area to open Task Manager. Click the mode area to open "Node Info". |
| Bottom | The left end shows messages about the last operation. When there is nothing to report, it shows "Ready"; while media info is being retrieved, it shows "Retrieving media info. N remaining". If the license is not registered, is waiting to be verified, or is invalid, that status is shown when there is no other message. While a trial license is in use, the remaining trial period is shown in the same place, for example "Trial license: 3 days left" (13.6). The center shows, in red, warnings that must stay visible (such as the reason the agent listener could not start, or a caution when encoding starts). On the right, "N watched folders" is shown when Folder Watch is enabled. Click it to open the "Folder Watch" page of Settings. Click "Pause Watch" to its right to pause Folder Watch. While Folder Watch is paused, "Watch paused" is shown instead of the folder count, and the button changes to "Resume Watch" (10.5). While encoding is paused, "Paused" is shown to the right of these items (5.4). When the product runs as a Windows service, the connection state is shown further to the right: "Connected to the service" or "Cannot connect to the service". The right end shows the results of the update check (8.10). Click "New version 1.2.0" to open the "Update Check" window, "N external tool updates" to open "External Tools", or "N agents with a different version" to open "Node Info". The right end is empty when there is nothing to report. |

"Help > Manual" opens this manual in your default browser.
It opens the file in the same folder as the executable: usermanual.html when the display language is Japanese, or usermanual-en.html when it is English.
If the file is not found, the status bar shows "The manual was not found: " followed by the path of the missing file.
With "Help > Support", you can send bug reports, requests, and questions to the support desk. Fill in "Type", "Subject", and "Details", and also "Email Address" if you need a reply. The OS, the app version, and the display language are shown under "Information to Send" (if a license is registered, the license ID is included as well). Review the information, select "I agree to send the information above", and click "Send". The PC name and the user name are not sent.
"Help > Save Diagnostics" collects the information used to investigate an inquiry and saves it as a single ZIP file.
It contains the activity logs of the last 7 days, the exception log (error.log), the settings, the external tool versions, and environment information (OS, app version, display language, and mode).
Auth tokens and shared path passwords in the settings are replaced with "********". The environment information does not include the PC name or the user name.
The activity logs contain the names and paths of encoded files. A confirmation saying so appears before saving; click "Save" and then choose where to save the file.
The file name is NyXGridEncode-diagnostics-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.zip. The product never sends the ZIP file.
"Help > Check for Updates" reads the latest version information from the official site and shows the result in the "Update Check" window (8.10).

This chapter shows how to encode one video with a built-in preset as is, without changing any individual settings. The operations described in the later chapters build on these steps.
_1 or _2 added to the end of the name.
To replace the previous output, select the completed rows, run them from "Encode" on the right-click menu,
and select "Overwrite" in the confirmation dialog.
If you rerun completed rows by selecting "All" or "Selected only" in the "Start Encoding" confirmation dialog, a new name is always used. The four basic tasks in everyday operation are adding files, specifying the output folder, starting encoding, and stopping it.
There are four ways to add files. Files added by any method other than Folder Watch use the preset selected at the top of the main window.
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Drag and drop | You can drop items anywhere in the window. When you drop a folder, its subfolders are scanned as well. When you drop a mix of files and folders, they are all added in a single operation. |
| "Add Files" | Opens a file selection dialog. Hold down Ctrl while clicking to select multiple files. |
| "Add Folder" | Scans the selected folder, including its subfolders, and adds the supported files. Folders reached through symbolic links or junctions are not scanned. |
| Folder Watch | Files placed in a specified folder are imported automatically. The preset applied is determined by the setting of each watched folder (Chapter 10). License required |
Files to add are identified by their extension. For the 44 supported extensions, see Appendix B. If you switch the file type to "All files (*.*)" in the "Add Files" dialog, you can also add files with other extensions.
For each added file, FFmpeg (ffprobe) retrieves the media information and determines whether the file can be read as a video. While this is in progress, the status bar shows "Retrieving media info. N remaining", and you cannot start encoding until retrieval finishes.
You cannot add files when external tools are missing or when this PC is running as an agent. If you enable "Auto-start encoding when items are added" under "Auto Run" in Settings, encoding starts as soon as files are added (8.5).
Type a path in the "Output Folder" box at the top of the main window, or click "Browse" and select a folder.
When you type a path, enter an absolute path such as D:\Encoded. You cannot change the folder while encoding is running.
Click "Open Output Folder" to open the output folder in File Explorer.
Output files are created directly in the output folder with the same name as the input file. The extension matches the container of the preset.
By default, files added from subfolders are also written directly to the output folder. To recreate the input folder structure in the output folder, select "Recreate folder structure in the output folder" (8.2.5).
If a file with the same name already exists, the output is written under a numbered name, such as name_1.mp4 or name_2.mp4.
Input files are never overwritten. If the specified folder does not exist, it is created when the output is written.
An existing output file is overwritten only when you rerun a completed row with "Encode" on the context menu and select "Overwrite" (5.3.2). For files imported by Folder Watch, if an output folder is specified for the watched folder, the output is written there instead (Chapter 10).
The output folder is determined for each item. If every item is written to the output folder of its watched folder, you can start encoding even if no output folder is specified in the main window. If the items to encode include any that are written to the output folder in the main window (items added manually, or items imported from a watched folder whose output folder is "Default"), encoding does not start until you specify an output folder. If an item added during a run has no output folder, only that item fails, and "No output folder is specified." is shown in its "Notes" column.
When you click "Start Encoding", a confirmation dialog shows the queue counts (total, completed, waiting, and selected) and asks you to choose what to encode.
| Option | Target |
|---|---|
| All | Targets every item regardless of status. Completed and failed rows are also returned to "Waiting" before running. |
| Waiting only | Targets only "Waiting" rows. Completed and failed rows are left as they are. This is the usual choice. |
| Selected only | Targets only the rows selected in the list, regardless of status. Completed and failed rows are returned to "Waiting" before running. Shown only when rows are selected. |
Rerunning items does not delete existing output files, as the confirmation dialog states: "Returning to waiting does not delete the previous output. A new file is created with a different name."
Specify how many jobs run at the same time under "Encoding" in Settings (8.2). For GPU encoding, the limit is the total of the "Parallel Jobs" values of all GPUs; for CPU encoding, the limit is the "Parallel Jobs" value itself.
Select rows in the list, right-click, and select "Encode" to show a list of assignment targets. Select a target to start encoding only the selected rows. While encoding is running, the selected rows are added to the running encode (5.4.3).
| Assignment target | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Auto-Assign | The node that processes the rows is chosen automatically. Always shown at the top of the list. |
| Local | The rows are processed on this PC. Shown when this PC is in a mode in which it performs encoding. |
| Agent name | The rows are processed on the specified agent. Only agents currently connected for distributed encoding are shown (Chapter 11). |
Of the selected rows, "Waiting" rows start as they are, and "Failed" rows are returned to "Waiting" before starting. If the selection includes "Completed" rows, you are asked how to handle the previous output.
| Option | Previous output |
|---|---|
| Overwrite | Replaces the previous output. The previous file is lost. |
| Create with a New Name | Writes the output with a number appended. The previous file is kept. |
While encoding is running, "Start Encoding" changes to "Stop / Pause" (so does the first command on the "Encode" menu). Click it, and then select "Stop", "Pause", or "Cancel" in the confirmation that appears.
| Choice | Action |
|---|---|
| Stop | Running files return to "Waiting", and their output is discarded. They start over from the beginning on the next run. Files that have not started remain "Waiting". |
| Pause | Suspends encoding of the running files and starts no new jobs. The button changes to "Resume", and "Paused" appears in the status bar and in the "Status" column of the running rows. |
While paused, click "Resume" to continue from where encoding stopped. No confirmation is shown.
Select a running row and press Ctrl + Delete, or select "Cancel" on the context menu. When the confirmation appears, click "OK". The output of the selected rows is discarded, and the rows return to "Waiting". Other rows continue processing.
While encoding is running, select "Waiting", "Completed", or "Failed" rows in the list, right-click, and select "Encode" to add the selected rows to the running encode. The other rows continue to be processed. Use this to run a row that you canceled individually, or to add other rows to a run that you started with "Selected only".
"Retry Failed", "Clear Completed", and "Clear All" are available as buttons at the top of the main window and on the "Encode" menu. "Delete" is on the context menu and the "Queue" menu.
| Operation | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Retry Failed | Returns all failed rows to "Waiting". It does not start encoding. Click "Start Encoding" next. |
| Clear Completed | Removes completed rows from the list. No confirmation is shown. The output files are kept. |
| Clear All | Empties the list after a confirmation. Only running rows remain. This cannot be undone. |
| Delete (Delete key) | Removes only the selected rows from the list. You cannot delete rows while encoding is running. |
Filter the list with the buttons in the upper row of the status bar ("All", "Waiting", "Running", "Completed", and "Failed") or with "Show All", "Filter by Waiting", "Filter by Running", "Filter by Completed", and "Filter by Failed" on the "Queue" menu.
Each button also shows a count, as in "All (7)". When there is at least one failed item, the "Failed" button is shown in red.
Filtering affects only the display. Hidden rows are still encoded. When no rows match, "No items match the filter." appears in the middle of the list, and you can switch back to "Show All" from there.
You can save the queue items to a file and load them on another PC or at a later time. Both operations are on the "Queue" menu.
NyXGridEncode-queue-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.json.The items in the file are added to the end of the queue as waiting items. Importing does not start encoding. The status bar shows the result as item counts. The following items are not added, and their counts are shown.
| Item | Handling |
|---|---|
| Same input file as a waiting or running item | Not added because it is a duplicate. |
| Input file not found or not accessible | Not added. Up to the first 20 paths are shown on screen, and all paths are recorded in the activity log. |
| Items with unreadable values or an unsupported file extension | Not added. The other items are added. |
| Items over the queue limit | Not added. Without a registered license key, waiting and running items are limited to 20 in total (2.4). |
If the preset in the file does not exist on this PC, the item is added with the preset selected in the main window, and the count is shown. The same applies to items whose preset name is longer than 64 characters. Items that were added by Folder Watch are treated as manually added items on the importing PC, and their output goes to the output folder set in the main window. Whether the folder structure is recreated depends on the "Recreate folder structure in the output folder" setting on the importing PC (8.2.5).
If the file cannot be read, nothing is added, and the status bar shows one of the following reasons.
| File | Message |
|---|---|
| Not an exported queue file (including a file with no format version or an invalid one) | This is not a queue file. Select an exported queue file. |
| A file exported by a newer version of this product | The file was exported by a newer version. Update the app before importing it. |
| A file larger than 1 MB | The file is too large. Select an exported queue file. |
| A file with more than 5,000 items | Too many items. Up to 5000 items can be imported from one file. |
| The file does not exist | The file was not found. |
| The file cannot be read (for example, insufficient permissions) | Could not import: reason |
Import is available when the external tools are installed. When the product runs as a Windows service, the service performs the import. After the items are added, the result appears in the status bar and in the window that lists the items whose input file was not found. The service treats items with a network path, and items whose input file the user operating the window cannot read, as items whose input file was not found. If the items to import exceed the 4 MB limit for sending to the service, nothing is sent, and "The items to import exceed the size limit for sending to the service. Select a file with fewer items." is shown. Export and import are not available when the mode is "Agent".
A preset is a complete set of encoding settings saved under a name so that you can reuse it. Five presets are built in. If they do not meet your requirements, add a preset (6.2).
| Name | Video | Bitrate | Resolution | Audio | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard - 1080p | H.265 | 6000 kbps | 1920x1080 | AAC 192 kbps | General-purpose use. |
| Archive - 4K High Quality | H.265 | 12000 kbps | 3840x2160 | AAC 256 kbps | Preserving the original quality as closely as possible. Loudness normalization is not applied, so the original dynamics are kept. |
| Compact - 720p | H.265 | 2500 kbps | 1280x720 | AAC 128 kbps | Mobile use, meeting recordings, and other cases where file size matters more than quality. |
| High Compression - 1080p AV1 | AV1 | 3500 kbps | 1920x1080 | Opus 128 kbps | Reducing file size further at comparable quality. Intended for GPUs that support AV1. |
| Subtitle Burn-in - 1080p | H.265 | 6000 kbps | 1920x1080 | AAC 192 kbps | Burning subtitles into the video so that they appear in any playback environment. |
All five presets use the mp4 container and "Downscale only" scaling. Only videos larger than the specified size are downscaled; smaller videos are output at their original size. Black bar auto-detection is enabled in all of them. Loudness normalization is enabled in every preset except "Archive - 4K High Quality". Subtitle handling is "Burn in" for "Subtitle Burn-in - 1080p" and "Keep as track" for the others. In every preset, the preferred language for audio and subtitles is Japanese, followed by English. "Standard - 1080p" is selected by default.
Open the editor with "Tools > Edit Presets" or the "Edit Presets" button at the top of the main window. When the editor opens, the preset selected at the top of the main window is already selected in the editor. You cannot open the editor while encoding is running. The same applies while the product is processing jobs as an agent. If encoding starts while the editor is open (for example, by auto-start), clicking "OK" does not save the presets, and "Presets cannot be edited while encoding is running." is shown at the bottom of the window. Click "OK" after the encoding finishes.
| Button | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Add | Adds one preset named "New Preset". If that name already exists, a number is appended, as in "New Preset (2)". The initial values are HEVC / H.265, 6000 kbps, mp4, and AAC 192 kbps, with scaling set to "Keep as is" and subtitle handling set to "Discard". |
| Duplicate | Copies the selected preset and appends " - Copy" to its name. To create a preset that differs only slightly from an existing one, duplicate it and change only the settings that differ. |
| Delete | Deletes the selected preset. You cannot delete the last remaining preset. |
| Export | Writes all presets to a single JSON file (the default file name is presets.json). |
| Import | Loads presets from an exported file. Imported presets are added, not replaced; if a preset with the same name already exists, a number is appended, as in "<name> (2)". Presets with invalid settings are not imported. |
| Get from Controller | Available only when this PC is running as an agent. Gets the presets from the controller and replaces all presets on this PC (11.7). |
| OK / Cancel | OK saves your changes and closes the window. Cancel discards your changes. |
If an entry is invalid or a combination of settings needs attention, the reason is shown at the bottom of the window. While an entry is invalid, you can neither move to another row nor save. Notes (messages that begin with "Note: ") do not prevent saving.
| Setting | Options | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Format | mp4 / mkv / webm / mov / avi / ts | The container format of the output file. When you change it, only the codecs and subtitle handling options that the format supports are offered. If a selected codec cannot be stored in the new format, it is switched automatically and the change is shown at the bottom of the window. For example, changing from mp4 to webm shows "Changed to settings that webm supports: HEVC / H.265 -> AV1 / AAC -> Stream Copy", so check the codecs after the change. |
| Codec | HEVC / H.265, H.264 / AVC, AV1, VP9, VP8, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2 / Xvid, WMV 8, Theora | The video compression method. Only the codecs that the selected format supports are shown. |
| Mode | VBR / CBR | VBR lets the bitrate vary around the specified value; CBR keeps it constant. VBR is the normal choice. When you change this setting, the same mode is set in the "Mode" setting of each encoder in Advanced Settings (Chapter 9). If you then change the mode in Advanced Settings, the Advanced Settings value is used. |
| Bitrate | 1 - 1000000 kbps | Higher values give better quality and larger files. |
| Multi-Pass | On / Off | Analyzes the video twice to optimize how the bitrate is distributed. Effective on NVIDIA GPUs and on the CPU; not used on Intel and AMD GPUs. On the CPU, the video is encoded twice, so encoding takes longer than with a single pass. |
| Scaling | Keep as is / Downscale only | "Downscale only" shrinks only videos larger than the specified resolution. Videos with a lower resolution are never upscaled. |
| Resolution | Even numbers, 16 - 8192, for both width and height | The maximum size used with "Downscale only". The aspect ratio (such as 16:9) is shown to the right, so you can check that the ratio is what you intended. |
| Auto-detect black bars and crop | On / Off | Detects black bars on all four sides and crops them off automatically. |
| Advanced Settings | Button | Sets detailed options for each encoder (Chapter 9). The area to the right of the button shows "Not specified", or the encoders that have settings, as in "Specified: NVIDIA / CPU". |
| Setting | Options | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Codec | AAC, Stream Copy, Opus, AC3, E-AC3, MP3, MP2, Vorbis, WMA 8, FLAC, ALAC, PCM 16-bit, PCM 24-bit | Only the codecs that the selected format supports are shown. "Stream Copy" copies the audio to the output as is, without re-encoding. This is fast, but it fails if the original audio is in a format that the container does not support. |
| Bitrate | 1 - 10000 kbps | Not used for FLAC, ALAC, and PCM (lossless formats) or for Stream Copy. |
| Preferred Language | Not specified / Japanese / English, and others | The language of the audio track to keep in the output with automatic selection. If no track matches, the default track is used; if there is no default track, the first track is used. Language names are shown in English. |
| Loudness Normalization | On / Off | Levels the volume to a common target. Useful when the volume varies between recordings. |
With automatic selection, one audio track is kept in the output. To keep multiple audio tracks, select them for each row in the list (7.2).
Choose how subtitles are handled with "Handling". "Preferred Language" is the subtitle language used with automatic selection; tracks are chosen the same way as for audio.
| Handling | Result |
|---|---|
| Discard | Subtitles are not included in the output. The "Subtitles" column in the list shows "Discard", and you cannot select subtitles. |
| Burn in | Draws the subtitles directly into the video. They appear in any playback environment, but they cannot be hidden later. Only one subtitle track can be burned in. |
| Keep as track | Keeps the subtitles in the output as subtitle tracks, so they can be shown or hidden in the player. Text subtitles are converted to mov_text for mp4 and mov and to WebVTT for webm; in mkv they are stored in their original format. Not available for avi and ts. |
You can edit "Subtitle Style" below only when "Burn in" is selected. You can check the resulting appearance in the sample below the fields.
| Setting | Options | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Font | Not specified, or a font installed on this PC | The typeface of the subtitles. With "Not specified", the default typeface is used. |
| Size | 3 - 8 % (in steps of 0.5) | Specified as a percentage of the video height. The default is 4.5 %. |
| Text Color | White, Yellow, Black, Red, Green, Light Blue, Silver | The color of the text. The default is White. |
| Outline / Shadow | None, White, Yellow, Black, Red, Green, Light Blue, Silver | The colors of the outline and the shadow. Selecting "None" turns that element off. The default for both is Black. |
| Outline Width / Shadow Distance | 0 - 10 | The width of the outline and the distance by which the shadow is offset. The defaults are 2 for the outline width and 1 for the shadow distance. |
| Position | Top Left, Top, Top Right, Left, Center, Right, Bottom Left, Bottom, Bottom Right | Where subtitles appear. The default is "Bottom". |
| Horizontal Margin / Vertical Margin | 0 - 500 | The distance from the edge of the video, in pixels. The vertical margin is measured from the bottom edge when the position is at the bottom, and from the top edge when it is at the top. The default for both is 20. |
| Bold / Italic | On / Off | Makes the text bold or italic. |
| Apply to ASS subtitles too | On / Off | Ignores the formatting embedded in ASS subtitles and draws them with the settings in this window. The default is Off. |
Select rows in the list (multiple rows can be selected), and select the preset to apply from "Preset" on the context menu. The preset is applied to all selected rows at once, without confirmation. The status bar then shows "Changed the preset of N items to "<name>"."
The preset box at the top of the main window sets the preset for files you add from now on, so it does not affect existing rows.
A preset is a set of settings shared by multiple jobs. Adjustments such as removing black bars from particular jobs only, outputting only a specified range, or choosing which audio to keep are specified per job.
Select a single row in the list, and then click the "Adjust" button at the top of the main window or select "Tools > Adjust". Adjust is unavailable in the following cases. Point to the button to see the reason.
Click or drag the "Position" bar to show the video at that point. Click "Play" to play from the current position, and click it again to stop. "Volume" is the preview playback volume and does not affect the output. While a crop is specified, a short clip for checking the result is created before playback, so it takes a few seconds for playback to start.
Enter the number of pixels to cut off in the four boxes: Left, Top, Right, and Bottom. You cannot set the crop by dragging a frame with the mouse. After entering the values, click "Apply" to update the preview. The maximum for each box is the video width or height minus 2.
For video with black bars at the top and bottom, we recommend using "Auto-Detect". It detects the black bars in the actual video, fills in the boxes, and updates the preview.
Enter times in "Start" and "End". If Start is empty, the output starts from the beginning; if End is empty, the output runs to the end. You can enter times in two formats.
| Format | Meaning |
|---|---|
90 | A number alone is interpreted as seconds. This example is 90 seconds (1 minute 30 seconds). Decimals are allowed. |
00:01:30.500 | The hours:minutes:seconds.milliseconds format. Milliseconds can be omitted (00:01:30). Values over 24 hours are also accepted. |
01:30, is interpreted as hours:minutes, which specifies 1 hour 30 minutes.
To specify minutes and seconds, enter 00:01:30.Move the "Position" bar, and then click "Current Position" to the right of Start or End to enter that time in that box. Use this to set positions while checking the video. To clear both boxes, click "Clear". If an entry is invalid, the reason is shown at the bottom of the window when you click "OK" (for example, the end position is at or before the start position, or the range exceeds the length of the input).
When the subtitle handling of the preset is "Burn in", selecting "Override subtitle style for this item only" lets you specify a subtitle style for this row that differs from the preset. The settings are the same as those of the preset's subtitle style (6.4), and their initial values are the preset's settings.
The subtitle to be burned in is overlaid on the preview video. The overlay is for checking size and position, and details may differ from the actual burned-in result. To remove the override, clear the check box and click "OK".
In the following cases, the check box cannot be selected, and the reason is shown to the right of it.
To keep multiple audio tracks, or to use a track other than the one chosen by the preset's preferred language, right-click the row and select "Audio" or "Subtitles". You can also open the window by double-clicking the "Audio" or "Subtitles" column in the list.
When nothing is selected (automatic selection), one audio track and one subtitle track are selected according to the preset's preferred language. The "Audio" and "Subtitles" columns in the list show the following.
| Display | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Auto | Tracks are selected automatically by the preset's preferred language. |
| jpn 5.1ch +1 | Tracks were selected manually. Shows the language and channel layout of the first (default) track, followed by the number of other tracks kept. |
| jpn burned in | The subtitle to burn in was selected manually ("Subtitles" column). |
| Discard | The preset is set to discard subtitles ("Subtitles" column). In this case, you cannot select subtitles. |
| None | The input file has no track of that type. |
| - | Media information is still being retrieved. You cannot select tracks until retrieval finishes. |
If you open the window with multiple rows selected, the selection is applied to all of them at once (the window shows "Applies to the N selected items."). The choices are built from the track layout of the first row, so for files with a different track layout, tracks that do not exist in those files are ignored. You can also select a single row, copy its selection with "Copy Audio and Subtitle Selection" on the context menu, and then select other rows and run "Paste Audio and Subtitle Selection".
Running rows and rows for jobs received as an agent are not changed. Completed rows can be changed, and the changes take effect when the row is run again.
Select a single row and select "Media Info" on the context menu or the "Queue" menu to check the resolution, codecs, and track layout. Use it when the resolution is not what you expected or to check the number of audio tracks. This display requires ffprobe.
| Group | Items shown |
|---|---|
| General | Duration, File Size, Container, Total Bitrate, File Path |
| Video | Stream ID, Codec, Frame Rate, Resolution, Bitrate, Duration, Language, Default Track |
| Audio | Stream ID, Codec, Bitrate, Sample Rate, Channels, Duration, Language, Default Track |
| Subtitles | Stream ID, Codec, Language, Default Track, Forced |
To open the log, double-click a row (except in the "Audio" and "Subtitles" columns), or select "Log" on the context menu or the "Queue" menu.
The window shows the log output by the encoding program.
Each line starts with the date and time it was recorded, in the format [YYYY/MM/DD HH:MM:SS.sss].
The command that was run is recorded at the top of the log, so you can check which settings were passed.
While a job is running, new output is appended, and the view scrolls automatically as long as the end of the log is displayed.
Up to the latest 2000 lines are kept for each item, and older lines are deleted.
If you set the job log retention under "Log" in Settings to a value other than 0, the same content is saved to a file for each job (8.8).
Open this window from "Tools > Settings" or with the "Settings" button at the top of the main window. Ten categories are listed on the left; selecting one changes the content on the right. You can open it while encoding is running. With "Export" and "Import" at the bottom left, you can save the settings to a file and load them on another PC (8.11).
| Mode | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Standalone | Encodes on this PC only. Default. |
| Controller + Encoder | Assigns jobs to agents and also encodes on this PC. License required |
| Controller Only | Only assigns jobs to agents and does not encode on this PC. This configuration is for a dedicated server that does not encode. License required |
| Agent | Encodes jobs assigned by the controller. This PC does not need a license. |
The "Controller" and "Agent" groups at the bottom can be used only when the corresponding mode is selected. Without a registered license key, "The controller modes require a registered license key." is shown and the two controller modes cannot be selected. For details on each item, see Chapter 11. The Wake-on-LAN settings (11.5.2) are at the bottom of the "Controller" group, and the auto shutdown settings (11.5.4) are at the bottom of the "Agent" group.
Depending on the mode, some items in other categories are also unavailable. Unavailable items are grayed out, and the reason is shown in red.
| Category and item | Unavailable in | Reason shown |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding (Encoding Method, GPU Encoding, CPU Encoding) | Controller Only | The Controller Only mode does not encode. |
| Encoding (Stall Detection) | Agent | Agents use the controller's stall detection settings. |
| Encoding (Output Folder Structure) | Agent | The controller decides the output path. |
| Benchmark (GPU / CPU Benchmark) | Controller Only | The Controller Only mode does not encode. |
| Benchmark (File Transfer Benchmark) | Standalone, Agent | Available while running as a controller. |
| Folder Watch | Agent | An agent has no queue. Folder watch does not run. |
| Auto Run (Start Triggers) | Agent | An agent has no queue. Jobs come from the controller. |
| Auto Run (Auto Shutdown) | Agent | Agents use the settings in the Agent group on the Mode page. |
| Notification (Play a sound when the queue finishes) | Agent | An agent has no queue. Completion notifications do not occur. |
| Notification (External Notifications) | Agent | Agents do not have a queue. External notifications are sent by the controller. |
Folder watch, the file transfer benchmark, auto shutdown when the queue finishes, and external notifications cannot be used without a registered license key, even in a matching mode. In that case, a reason such as "Register a license key to use folder watch." is shown.
The settings in this category are also used when running as an agent.
Select "GPU Encoding" or "CPU Encoding". The default is "GPU Encoding". GPU encoding uses NVEncC / QSVEncC / VCEEncC, and CPU encoding uses FFmpeg. On a PC without a GPU, select "CPU Encoding". Of the groups below, only the one for the selected method can be used.
The list shows each detected GPU in the form "#0 | NVEncC | GPU name". Below the list, the current status is shown, for example "2 detected / 2 in use / 4 parallel jobs in total". If no GPU is detected, "No GPU detected. Click Rescan." is shown and encoding is done on the CPU.
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| GPU list | Selected | Jobs are assigned to the selected GPUs. GPUs that are not selected are not used. A newly detected GPU is selected when it is added to the list. |
| Parallel Jobs (per GPU) | 1 | Number of jobs the GPU processes at once. Range: 1 - 16. The sum of Parallel Jobs for the selected GPUs is the maximum number of jobs this PC processes at once. |
| Up / Down | - | Moves the selected GPU up or down in priority. Jobs are assigned starting with the GPU at the top. |
| Rescan | - | Detects the connected GPUs and updates the list. The selections, the Parallel Jobs values, and the split settings are kept. Run it after adding a GPU or updating the driver. If no GPU can be detected, the list is left unchanged and "Could not detect a GPU. Check the external tools and the driver." is shown. |
| File Split | Disabled | Splits a single file by time and encodes the parts simultaneously on the same GPU. Choose "Disabled", "Use free slots", or "Always split". "Use free slots" works only when there are no waiting items and the GPU has a free parallel slot. |
| Segments | 2 | Used only when "Always split" is selected. Range: 2 - 16. |
| Frame Split | Driver default | Splits each frame into strips and encodes them simultaneously on multiple NVENC units of the same GPU. Choose "Driver default", "Auto", "Disabled", "2 segments", "3 segments", or "4 segments". It is used only on NVIDIA GPUs when the video codec is HEVC or AV1. |
File Split, Segments, and Frame Split apply to the GPU currently selected in the list. The target GPU is shown below the list, for example "Target: #0 | NVEncC | GPU name". When a non-NVIDIA GPU is selected, Frame Split cannot be set.
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Parallel Jobs | 3 | Number of jobs processed at once. Range: 1 - 32. As the note on the screen says, 1 - 2 is recommended. When Threads is 0 (auto), a single CPU encode uses all logical cores, so increasing Parallel Jobs barely improves the overall speed. |
| Threads | 0 | Maximum number of threads used per job. 0 means auto (all logical cores are used). Range: 0 - 256. Also applies to jobs switched from the GPU to the CPU. Limit it when you run encoding alongside other work. |
Stall detection stops jobs whose encoder makes no progress within the timeout. A job is treated as stalled when neither the progress percentage nor the frame count increases within the timeout. Log output from the external tool does not count as progress. After the progress percentage reaches 100%, the frame count is still checked until the external tool exits. The MP4 rewrite that runs after the external tool exits (adding filler data and recording the maximum bitrate; 9.3) is not subject to stall detection.
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Stop stalled jobs | Selected | When cleared, stalls are not detected. |
| Timeout | 10 minutes | Range: 1 - 120 minutes. Jobs whose progress does not change for this period are stopped. After an encode starts, the wait for the first progress report is the timeout plus 2 minutes. In a 2-pass encode, the same applies after the second pass starts. Time spent paused (5.4) does not count toward the timeout. |
Stopped jobs are handled as follows.
When "Recreate folder structure in the output folder" is selected, folders with the same names as the added folder and its subfolders are created inside the output folder, and the output files are written to the matching folders. By default this option is cleared, and all files are written directly to the output folder.
| How the files were added | Example output path (when the output folder is E:\Out) |
|---|---|
Folder D:\Video\Anime added | D:\Video\Anime\S01\ep01.mkv is written to E:\Out\Anime\S01\ep01.mkv |
| Files added individually | Directly in the output folder |
| Imported by Folder Watch | Determined by the "Folder Structure" column of each watched folder (10.1). Only the folders inside the watched folder are recreated. |
In the following cases, only the affected file is written directly to the output folder without recreating the folder structure. The encode does not fail. The reason is shown in the "Notes" column and logged as WARN in the activity log.
| Condition | Shown in the "Notes" column |
|---|---|
| The output path is longer than 245 characters | The output path is too long, so the output file is written directly to the output folder. |
| A junction or symbolic link exists where a folder would be created | The output path contains a link, so the output file is written directly to the output folder. |
| A file with the same name exists where a folder would be created | A file with the same name as a folder in the output path already exists, so the output file is written directly to the output folder. |
| A folder in the output path cannot be accessed (for example, the network is unavailable or permission is denied) | A folder in the output path cannot be accessed, so the output file is written directly to the output folder. |
| The input file is not under the added folder or watched folder | The input file is not under the added folder or watched folder, so the output file is written directly to the output folder. |
When you run a completed item again with "Encode" on the right-click menu and select "Overwrite", the previous output is not overwritten if a folder on its path is a junction or symbolic link. The output is written under a new name, the "Notes" column shows "The overwrite target path contains a link, so the output file is written under a new name.", and a WARN entry is logged in the activity log. The output is also written under a new name, without overwriting the previous output, if a file has the same name as a folder on the path or if a folder on the path cannot be accessed. In these cases, the "Notes" column shows "A file with the same name as the overwrite target folder already exists, so the output file is written under a new name." or "The overwrite target folder cannot be accessed, so the output file is written under a new name.", respectively.
For each GPU and the CPU, this finds the fastest parallel count by encoding a test video. The test video (1080p, 30 seconds) is created automatically, and the files used are deleted after each run. The time required depends on the number of targets and "Max Parallel Jobs".
For each target, the measurement runs in the following order. Because each parallel count is measured at least twice, it takes about twice as long as measuring each count once.
After the measurement, the line for each parallel count shows the time (the average of two runs, or the median of three), the throughput relative to 1 parallel job, and the variation (the difference between the longest and shortest times divided by the median). The lines shown during the measurement are the results of individual runs, each starting with the run number.
A recommended value is determined for each target. Of the parallel counts whose throughput is within 10% of the fastest one, the smallest is recommended, because when speeds are about the same, the count with less load and lower power consumption is preferred. The reason for choosing that parallel count is shown below each recommended value. Parallel counts at which any job failed are excluded from the candidates, including when only one of the runs failed. If, for the recommended or the fastest parallel count, no two of three runs are within 5% of each other, the reason includes "The results varied widely, so measuring again is recommended." Close other applications and measure again. Clicking "Cancel" during the measurement stops it and deletes the files used for the measurement.
In a controller mode, this measures the file transfer speed between this PC and the connected agents. Files are transferred over HTTP to and from agents that cannot read the shared paths, so the result gives an estimate of that speed.
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| What to Measure | Checked | List of connected agents. If no agent is connected, "No agent is connected." is shown and you cannot measure. |
| Data Size | 0.5 GB | Amount of data sent both ways. Select from 0.5 GB to 5.0 GB in 0.5 GB steps. |
| Measure | - | Measures the actual speed by sending random data both ways. The measurement starts the next time the agent requests a job, even if encoding has not been started. During the measurement, the button changes to "Cancel". The results are shown for each agent as the data size, the round-trip time, the amount transferred per second, and Mbps. |
For details on each item, see Chapter 10.
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Scan Interval | 5 seconds | How often the folders are checked. Range: 1 - 3600 seconds. |
| Auto-start encoding when files are detected | On | Adds detected files to the queue and starts encoding automatically. When off, files are only added to the queue and encoding does not start. |
| Enabled | On | Lets you stop watching row by row. Use it to stop watching a folder without deleting its settings. To stop watching all folders at once, use "Pause Watch" in the status bar (10.5). |
| Watched Folders | - | Select a folder with "Add" below the list. You cannot type a path directly. You cannot add the output folder or a folder under it, a folder that is already in the list, or a folder under a watched folder that has both "Enabled" and "Include Subfolders" turned on. |
| Preset | First preset | Preset applied to files placed in the folder. |
| Output Folder | Default | With "Default", output goes to the output folder set in the main window. To set a folder for a row, click "Browse" in the cell and select the folder. To return to "Default", select the row and click "Restore Defaults" below the list. |
| Source File After Encoding | Leave in place | How the source file is handled when encoding succeeds. Choose "Leave in place", "Move to the processed folder", "Move to the Recycle Bin", or "Delete" (see 10.3). |
| Re-import | Off | When on, files that have been moved, moved to the Recycle Bin, or deleted are removed from the processed record, and the same file is imported again when you put it back. Not available in rows set to "Leave in place" (see 10.3.1). |
| Include Subfolders | On | Also watches the subfolders. |
| Folder Structure | Off | When on, the folder structure inside the watched folder is recreated in the output folder. The name of the watched folder itself is not included (8.2.5). |
You can change the column widths of the list by dragging the borders between the column headers. Columns that do not fit in the list are shown by scrolling horizontally.
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Auto-start encoding when items are added | Starts encoding automatically as soon as files are added to the queue. This applies to files added by drag and drop as well as with "Add Files" and "Add Folder". It is suited to adding many files at once and running them unattended. |
| Resume the previous queue at startup | If NyXGridEncode ended abnormally during encoding last time (for example, because it was forcibly terminated or the power failed), encoding of the waiting items starts automatically at the next startup. When off, the status bar shows "Restored N items left from the previous run. Click Start Encoding to resume." and encoding does not start until you click "Start Encoding". If you exit normally during encoding, the running items are returned to waiting, so encoding does not start automatically regardless of this setting. |
If encoding cannot start automatically with the two items in this section or with "Auto-start encoding when files are detected" in Folder Watch, for example because external tools are missing or an item has no output folder, the status bar shows "Could not start automatically:" followed by the reason, and the reason is also recorded in the activity log.
When all jobs in the queue have finished and the queue stays that way for the wait time, this PC performs the selected action: shut down, force shut down, sleep, or hibernate. This feature is available when the mode is "Standalone", "Controller + Encoder", or "Controller Only". It requires a Standard or higher license. When the mode is "Agent", this group is unavailable and shows "Agents use the settings in the Agent group on the Mode page." Configure auto shutdown in the "Agent" group on the "Mode" page instead (11.5.4).
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| When queue finishes | Do nothing | Select "Do nothing" or "Always". With "Do nothing", auto shutdown is not performed. |
| Action | Shut down | Select "Shut down", "Force shut down", "Sleep", or "Hibernate". Each action works the same as in agent auto shutdown (11.5.4). |
| Wait time | 10 minutes | Range: 1 - 120 minutes. The action runs when the queue has stayed finished for this long. |
| Warning | 60 seconds | Range: 0 - 600 seconds. Before the action, a window shows the remaining seconds and "Cancel". With 0, no warning is shown. |
| Skip while in use | On, 10 minutes | Range: 1 - 120 minutes. If the keyboard or mouse is used after the queue finishes, the action does not run until the specified time has passed since the last input, and the conditions are checked again later. Input before the queue finishes (during encoding) is not counted. |
| Agent disconnect wait limit | 30 minutes | Range: 0 - 120 minutes. On a controller, the maximum time to wait for all connected agents to disconnect. With 0, there is no limit, and the controller waits until all agents disconnect. |
These items are separate from the agent auto shutdown settings.
Conditions for a finished queue
The queue is treated as finished when all of the following conditions remain true for the wait time. If any condition stops being true, the wait time starts over.
Waiting for agents to disconnect
On a controller, after the queue is confirmed as finished, the controller waits until all connected agents disconnect. When agents also use auto shutdown (11.5.4), the agents stop first, and then the controller runs its action. The controller does not wait for agents that have stopped for auto shutdown or have disconnected. If the "Agent disconnect wait limit" passes after the queue is confirmed as finished, the controller proceeds without waiting for the connected agents, and a WARN entry is logged in the activity log. The warning or the action starts when both conditions are met: the wait time has passed, and the agents have disconnected.
Warning, cancellation, and skipping while in use
These work in the same way as agent auto shutdown (11.5.5). If you click "Cancel" in the warning, auto shutdown does not run until the PC restarts. If a job is added to the queue or folder watch is resumed during the warning, the warning stops. This is not treated as a cancellation, and the conditions are checked again the next time the queue finishes. When NyXGridEncode runs as a service, the notification area app in the signed-in user's session shows the warning window. If no user is signed in, the action runs without a warning, and this is recorded in the activity log. For how "Shut down" is requested when NyXGridEncode runs as a service, see 11.5.5. Shutdown and forced shutdown do not install pending Windows updates.
Just before the action
Status
The bottom of the group shows the auto shutdown status on one line. Statuses include "Disabled", "Not available with this license", "Not applicable while folder watch is running", "No jobs processed since startup", "Waiting for the queue to finish", "Waiting for agents to disconnect", "Waiting", "Postponed because the PC is in use", "Warning", and "Canceled until the PC restarts".
The settings in this section are included in "Auto Run, Notification, Display, Log, and Update Check" when you export settings (8.11).
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Play a sound when the queue finishes | Plays a sound when all items in the queue have been processed. A different sound plays depending on whether any item failed. Not available in agent mode. |
| Prevent sleep while encoding | Keeps the PC from going to sleep while encoding. Sleep is allowed again when no items are being encoded. Works in all modes. Always turn it on when running for a long time on a laptop. |
External notifications report events such as queue completion and job failures through LINE, Discord, Slack, a webhook, or email. This feature requires a license that supports agents (Pro or higher). It is not available when the mode is "Agent". Only the instance that holds the queue sends notifications: NyXGridEncode in "Standalone", "Controller + Encoder", or "Controller Only" mode. When NyXGridEncode runs as a service, the service sends them, not the window.
| Event | When it is sent | Subject |
|---|---|---|
| Queue finished | When all items in the queue have finished. The numbers of completed and failed items are sent. | Queue finished, Queue finished - with failures |
| Job failed | When a job fails and is not retried automatically. The input and output paths, the node, and the reason are sent. | Job failed: file name, Jobs failed: N |
| Job stalled | When a job is stopped because of a stall and fails (8.2.4). This is sent even if the job is retried automatically. If a job stalls on the GPU and is processed again on the CPU, this is sent only if the job also stalls on the CPU. | Job stalled: file name |
| Agent disconnected | When an agent that stopped responding because of a power loss, a network failure, or a similar cause is disconnected after 60 seconds. This is not sent for an agent that stops normally (this product exits, the service stops, the mode is changed, or Windows goes to sleep), because the agent notifies the controller that it is stopping (11.4). Agents of earlier versions do not send this notice, so this is sent 60 seconds after they stop, even when they stop normally. | Agent disconnected: name, Agents disconnected: N |
| Agent auto-stopped | When an agent notifies the controller that it is stopping for auto shutdown (11.5.4). Off by default. "Agent disconnected" is not sent for an agent that stopped for auto shutdown. | Agent auto-stopped: name, Agents auto-stopped: N |
| Auto Shutdown | Just before this PC runs auto shutdown when the queue finishes (8.5.1). Off by default. The action and the numbers of completed and failed items are sent. Pending batched failures are sent first, and NyXGridEncode waits up to 2 seconds for them to be sent before the action runs. | Auto shutdown: action |
Each subject starts with "[NyXGridEncode]". The message body contains the host name and the time, followed by lines in the "Item: value" format, such as "Input: path".
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Failure delivery | Select "Individually" or "Batch every 5 minutes". When batched, the first failure is sent immediately, and failures in the following 5 minutes are sent in one message. When all items in the queue have finished, the batched failures are sent without waiting for the 5 minutes, followed by the queue finished notification. When NyXGridEncode exits or the service stops, the batched failures are sent first. When the mode is changed to "Agent", or a license change makes external notifications unavailable, the batched failures are sent before sending stops. NyXGridEncode waits up to 2 seconds for sending to finish. If it does not finish in time, "Exiting before external notifications finished sending" is logged as WARN in the activity log. |
| Notification language | Language of the notification messages (日本語 / English). Set separately from the display language. |
| Send to LINE | Sends through the LINE Messaging API. Enter the channel access token issued in the LINE Developers console and the recipient ID (user ID, group ID, or room ID). The recipient ID is 33 characters long and starts with U, C, or R. |
| Send to Discord | Enter the webhook URL created in the channel settings. If the URL does not start with https://discord.com/api/webhooks/, "The URL is not a webhook URL. Enter a URL that starts with https://discord.com/api/webhooks/." is shown and the settings cannot be saved. |
| Send to Slack | Enter the incoming webhook URL created in your Slack app. If the URL does not start with https://hooks.slack.com/, "The URL is not an incoming webhook URL. Enter a URL that starts with https://hooks.slack.com/." is shown and the settings cannot be saved. |
| Send to webhook | Sends a JSON POST request to the specified URL. Both http and https are supported. The JSON fields are source, event, subject, text, host, and time. event is one of queue_completed, job_failed, job_stalled, agent_disconnected, agent_auto_stopped, auto_shutdown, and test, and does not depend on the notification language. |
| Send by email | Sends through an SMTP server. For encryption, select STARTTLS (normally port 587) or SSL/TLS (normally port 465). Unencrypted connections are not supported. If the user name is blank, the message is sent without authentication. Separate up to 10 recipient addresses with commas. |
| Send Test | Sends a test notification using the values entered and shows the result to the right of the button. You do not need to save the settings first. If an entry is invalid, nothing is sent and the reason is shown. |
| Item | Choices and default | Description and when it takes effect |
|---|---|---|
| Theme | Use system setting (default) / Light / Dark / Navy / High Contrast | Applied to the window as soon as you select it. Reverts if you close the window without saving. |
| Language | Use system setting (default) / 日本語 (Japanese) / English | Applied to the entire UI and the menu of the notification area icon when you save with "OK". With "Use system setting", the UI is shown in Japanese if the Windows display language is Japanese, and in English otherwise. |
| Minimize to tray | Off (default) | When on, the close button minimizes the app to the notification area instead of exiting. Takes effect when saved. |
| Always on top | Off (default) | Keeps the window in front of all other windows. Takes effect when saved. |
| Start minimized | Off (default) | Starts minimized to the taskbar. The app is not placed in the notification area. Takes effect from the next start. |
You can also change these items from the "View" menu in the main window. Changes made from the menu are saved immediately.
The activity log and job logs each have a "Retention" setting that controls saving and deleting. The values work the same way for both logs. You can enter a value from -1 to 1000; values outside this range cannot be entered.
| Retention | Behavior |
|---|---|
| -1 | Logs are saved and never deleted. |
| 0 | Logs are not saved. Existing log files are not deleted. To remove them, open the folder with "Open Log Folder" and delete them. |
| 1 - 1000 | Logs are saved, and files older than the retention period are deleted at startup. |
When you change the retention and click "OK", the change applies immediately to whether logs are saved. Files past the retention period are deleted at the next startup. The same applies when the product runs as a service. If you edit the settings file directly and enter a value outside the range, it is changed to -1 or 1000 at startup and the change is recorded in the activity log.
The activity log is one file per day, named app-YYYYMMDD.log.
The default retention is 30 days. Set it to 0 to stop saving the activity log.
If a day's log reaches 64 MB, the rest of that day's entries are omitted, and the number of omitted entries is recorded at the top of the next day's log.
Each line records the date and time ([YYYY/MM/DD HH:MM:SS.sss]), the level (INFO, WARN, or ERROR), and the message, in that order.
The location is shown after "Location:" in this category, and "Open Log Folder" opens it in File Explorer.
If you installed to the default location (Program Files) with the installer, the location is %ProgramData%\NyXGridEncode\logs.
If you placed the executable in a writable folder outside Program Files, it is the logs folder in the same folder as the executable.
Records of unexpected errors (error.log) are also saved in the same folder. Each record uses the same date and time format as the activity log.
error.log is not affected by the retention setting and is saved even when the activity log retention is 0, so that the cause of a startup failure is recorded.
When the job log retention is not 0, the same content as the Log window (7.3) is saved to a separate file each time a job ends. The default is 0 (not saved). When you change it from 0 and click "OK", a confirmation appears explaining that a file is created for each job and that the files use free disk space. If you click "Cancel" in the confirmation, the retention returns to 0 and the settings are not saved. If "Save a log for each job" was on in an earlier version, the retention is set to 30 days; if it was off, the retention is set to 0.
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Location | The jobs folder under the activity log location. It is shown after "Location:" in this category. |
| File name | YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS_input-file-name.log. The date and time are when the job ended, and the input file name includes its extension. If jobs with the same name end within the same second, a number such as -2 is added after the date and time. |
| Contents | The input, output, status, and node at the top, followed by the log. |
| Jobs saved | Jobs that ended on this PC. A controller also saves the logs of jobs processed by agents. |
| Retention | Follows the job log retention (see the table in 8.8). |
"Status" shows "Not registered", "Stopped", "Running", or "Unknown". Clicking a button shows a confirmation, followed by a Windows User Account Control prompt. The progress of the operation is shown below the buttons, and you cannot close the Settings window while an operation is in progress.
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Register | Registers NyXGridEncode as a service and starts it. When the service starts, NyXGridEncode closes and then stays resident in the notification area. The next time you open the window, it is shown connected to the service. Unavailable while the service is running or when FFmpeg, a required external tool, is not installed. Also unavailable when the mode is not "Agent" and the license is not Standard or higher. |
| Delete | Stops and removes the service. Running encodes are interrupted. The settings and the queue are kept. Unavailable when the service is not registered. |
| Restart | Stops the service and starts it again. Running encodes are interrupted. Unavailable when the service is not registered. Also unavailable when the mode is not "Agent" and the license is not Standard or higher. |
When the license does not allow "Register" and "Restart", the reason is shown under the "Service" heading (12.1). "Delete" is available regardless of the license. The service and the window run at the same time, and encoding continues after you close the window. Details, including operation from the command line, are explained in Chapter 12.
Checks for new versions of the product and of the external tools. Both checks are enabled by default. They run at startup and, while the product keeps running, every 24 hours. When a new version is available, it is shown at the right end of the bottom row of the status bar. Neither the product nor the external tools are replaced automatically.
| Item | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Check for new versions of the app | Reads the latest version information from the official site. When a new version is available, the status bar shows it, for example "New version 1.2.0". The license ID and information that identifies the PC are not sent; the comparison takes place on the PC. |
| Check for new versions of external tools | Reads the latest version of each installed external tool from its source. When updates are available, the status bar shows "N external tool updates" and the "Status" column of the "External Tools" window shows "Outdated". Agents do not check. |
| Check Now | Checks both immediately, regardless of these settings, and shows the result below the button. "Last checked" is the date and time when the product version was last checked. |
Click "New version" in the status bar, or choose "Help > Check for Updates", to open the "Update Check" window. When a new version is available, it shows the current version, the new version, the release date, and the main changes. Click "Open Download Page" to open the download page of the official site in your default browser.
If the product was installed with the installer, "Update Now" is also shown. Clicking it does the following.
Click "Export" at the bottom left of the Settings window to open a window where you choose the items to export.
The items are "Preset", "Folder Watch", "Encoding", "Auto Run, Notification, Display, Log, and Update Check", and "Mode"; by default, all items are selected.
Click "Export" and choose where to save the file; it is saved as NyXGridEncode-settings-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.json.
The values entered in the Settings window are exported, including values not yet saved with "OK".
"Mode" includes the auth tokens and the shared path passwords. The auth tokens are recorded as they are. The shared path passwords are encrypted with a key specific to this product, so they cannot be read by opening the file. However, anyone who imports the file into this product can use the passwords, so do not store the exported file where other people can read it. If an encrypted password in the file is changed, that password is not imported. Changes to the shared paths and user names in the file are not detected. "Mode" also includes the Wake-on-LAN settings, the manually set MAC addresses, and the auto shutdown settings for agents (11.5). "Auto Run, Notification, Display, Log, and Update Check" includes the external notification tokens, webhook URLs, and SMTP password. They are encrypted in the same way as the shared path passwords. The license, the GPU selection, the window positions and sizes, the output folder, the agent display name, and whether folder watch is paused are never exported, whichever items you select. In the shared path list (11.2.1), the location on this PC, user name, and password used only by the output folder row are not exported either. If you do not select "Folder Watch", those used only by watched folder rows are not exported.
Click "Import" and select an exported file to open a window where you choose the items to import. If presets with the same name exist, choose "Add with a new name" (default) or "Overwrite". Watched folders that use a renamed preset are imported with the new name. If watched folders or output folders are not found on this PC, their number and paths are shown. Click "Import" to reopen the Settings window with the imported values. They are saved when you click "OK". If you click "OK" while encoding is running, the presets are not changed, and the status bar shows "The presets were not changed because encoding is running." The other settings are saved. If a watched folder uses one of the imported presets, the watched folders are not changed either, and "The presets and watched folders were not changed because encoding is running." is shown. If you import "Mode", the auth tokens and the shared path passwords in the file are imported as well. If the file does not contain auth tokens, the tokens on this PC are kept. The shared path passwords are decrypted and saved in a form that can be decrypted only on this PC (11.2.1). If a password in the file cannot be read, for example because the file was edited, "Could not read the passwords for N shared paths:" followed by the shared paths is shown under "Mode", and that password is not imported. The Wake-on-LAN MAC addresses in "Mode" are replaced only if the file contains them; otherwise, the values on this PC are kept. If you import "Auto Run, Notification, Display, Log, and Update Check", the external notification tokens, webhook URLs, and SMTP password are imported as well. For values that are not in the file or cannot be read, the values on this PC are kept.
For the output folder and watched folder rows of the shared path list, the location on this PC, the shared path, the user name, and the password entered on this PC are kept if the row is still in the list after the import. If the file has values for the same row, or has a user name and password for a shared path on the same server, the values in the file are used instead. The values on this PC that are not kept are shown under "Mode", for example "The location on this PC is not kept for N shared paths:" and "The user name and password are not kept for N shared paths:", each followed by the shared paths. The counts are updated each time you change the selected items.
These are advanced options for each encoder. You normally do not need to change them. Use them only when you want to fine-tune quality or file size.
Open this window with the "Advanced Settings" button in the "Video" group of the Edit Presets window. There are four tabs: "NVIDIA NVEncC", "Intel QSVEncC", "AMD VCEEncC", and "CPU FFmpeg". When you close the window with "OK", the encoders that have settings are shown to the right of the button, for example "Specified: NVIDIA / CPU". If nothing is specified, "Not specified" is shown. The advanced settings are saved together with the preset when you click "OK" in the Edit Presets window.

The choices for "Mode" and "Quality" ("Speed Preset" for the CPU) for each encoder are as follows. Each list starts with "Not specified".
| Tab | Mode | Quality / Speed Preset |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | CQP / CBR / CBRHQ / VBR / VBRHQ | performance / default / quality / P1 - P7 |
| Intel | CBR / VBR / CQP / AVBR / LA / LA-HRD / LA-ICQ / ICQ / QVBR / VCM | best / higher / high / balanced / fast / faster / fastest |
| AMD | CQP / CBR / VBR / QVBR / VBRHQ / CBRHQ | balanced / fast / slow / slower |
| CPU | CRF / CBR | ultrafast / superfast / veryfast / faster / fast / medium / slow / slower / veryslow / placebo |
"VBR", like "Not specified", encodes with VBR using the video bitrate of the preset as the target. Modes other than CQP, ICQ, LA-ICQ, CRF, and AMD QVBR use the video bitrate of the preset.
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Quality (GPU) / Speed Preset (CPU) | Sets the balance between speed and quality. Slower settings give better quality at the same bitrate. For the CPU speed preset, slower settings give a smaller file at the same quality. If you have time to spare, choose a slower setting. |
| CRF (CPU) | Specifies quality rather than bitrate. Used only when CRF is selected in "Mode". Lower values give higher quality; the initial value is 23. The range is 0 - 51 for H.264 / HEVC and 0 - 63 for AV1. Suitable when you do not need to estimate the output size in advance. |
| CQP (GPU) | Select CQP in "Mode" and enter a quantization value (0 - 51) for each frame type in "QP I / P / B". Lower values give higher quality and larger files. The initial values are 20 / 23 / 25 for NVIDIA, 24 / 26 / 27 for Intel, and 22 / 24 / 27 for AMD. |
| CBR (GPU) | When CBR or CBRHQ is selected in "Mode", the bitrate that the video did not use is filled with filler data (data that is skipped during playback) after encoding, so that the average video bitrate matches the video bitrate of the preset. Quality does not change, and the file becomes larger by the amount filled. This applies when the output is MP4 and the video is H.264 or HEVC. AV1 and MKV are not filled, so the average can be lower than the video bitrate. The amount filled is recorded in the job log. |
| QP Min / Max (GPU) | Sets the range of quantization values (0 - 51) that the encoder uses. 0 means automatic and is not passed to the encoder. When "QP Min" is set, the encoder does not encode more finely than that value, for example in static scenes, and the file becomes smaller by the amount of bitrate left unused. Higher values give smaller files and lower quality. In CBR, the unused bitrate is filled with filler data to keep the bitrate constant, so to make files smaller, set "Mode" to "Not specified" or VBR. On NVIDIA, these values are not used when "Mode" is CQP. |
| Max Bitrate (GPU) | Sets the upper limit of the bitrate in kbps. 0 means automatic, and the limit chosen by the encoder is used. It is used only when "Mode" is one of the following: VBR and VBRHQ for NVIDIA; VBR, LA, LA-HRD, QVBR, and VCM for Intel; and VBR, VBRHQ, and QVBR for AMD. "Not specified" is treated as VBR. In CBR, the limit equals the video bitrate. With a method that uses the video bitrate, a value lower than the video bitrate cannot be saved. |
| ICQ / LA-ICQ (Intel) | Select ICQ or LA-ICQ in "Mode" and set "ICQ Quality" (1 - 51). Lower values give higher quality; the initial value is 24. |
| QVBR (AMD) | Select QVBR in "Mode" and set "QVBR Quality" (1 - 51). Lower values give higher quality; the initial value is 23. The video bitrate of the preset is not used; set the upper limit in "Max Bitrate". QVBR can be used only when the GPU supports it and the bit depth is 8 bits. Otherwise, encoding on the GPU fails. |
Some items cannot be used with certain video codecs set in the preset.
| Item | Supported video codecs |
|---|---|
| Profile, Level (all four tabs) | H.264 / HEVC / AV1 |
| Speed Preset, Tuning (CPU) | H.264 / HEVC. With HEVC, the film and stillimage tunings cannot be used. |
| CRF, Extra Parameters (CPU) | H.264 / HEVC / AV1 |
| B-Frames (CPU) | All except WMV 8 |
| No Scene Change Detection (CPU) | All except VP9 / VP8 / Theora |
| Max Bitrate, VBV Buffer Size (CPU) | All. However, VBV Buffer Size specified alone is not used with MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2, and either one specified alone is not used with WMV 8. |
Profile, Level, Speed Preset, Tuning, Extra Parameters, B-Frames, and No Scene Change Detection are grayed out and cannot be changed if they cannot be used with the codec that was selected when you opened the advanced settings. If a grayed-out item has a previously saved value, that value is kept. To clear it, click "Restore Defaults".
Items specified for a codec that cannot use them are not used during encoding. Items that are not used are shown in the "Notes" column of the queue, for example "When processing on the CPU, VP9 does not use the following advanced settings: CRF", and are also recorded in the log.
Folder watch imports and encodes videos placed in a specified folder. If you watch the folder where you copy recordings from a recording device, or the folder where downloads are saved, you do not need to add files to the queue or start encoding.
You can also set the following items above the list and in each row.
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Scan Interval | 5 seconds | How often the folders are scanned. Specify 1 to 3600 seconds. |
| Auto-start encoding when files are detected | On | Starts encoding imported files automatically. When this is off, files are only added to the queue and encoding does not start. If encoding cannot start, for example because external tools are missing or an item has no output folder, the reason is shown in the status bar and recorded in the activity log. |
| Enabled | On | Lets you stop watching individual folders. To stop watching a folder without deleting its settings, clear the check box. |
| Re-import | Off | When on, files that have been moved, moved to the Recycle Bin, or deleted are removed from the processed record, and the same file is imported again when you put it back (10.3.1). Not available in rows set to "Leave in place". |
| Include Subfolders | On | Also scans subfolders. When this is off, only files directly in the watched folder are imported. |
| Folder Structure | Off | When this is on, the folders inside the watched folder are recreated in the output folder (watched folder\S01\ep01.mkv is written to output folder\S01\ep01.mkv). When this is off, files are written directly to the output folder. Whether the structure is recreated depends on the setting when the item starts processing. If the structure cannot be recreated, for example because the output path is too long or contains a link, the file is written directly to the output folder, and the reason is shown in the "Notes" column (8.2.5). |
D:\Videos\Watch\Archive
and "Compact - 720p" to D:\Videos\Watch\Mobile.
The folder where you place a file then determines the preset that is applied. The folders are scanned at every scan interval (5 seconds by default). However, a file is not imported as soon as it is detected, because importing a file that is still being copied would mean encoding an incomplete file. A file is imported once all three of the following conditions are met.
As a result, it takes several scan intervals from the time a file is placed until it is imported. When a large file is being copied over the network, the time until that copy finishes is added.
| Condition | Reason |
|---|---|
| Unsupported extension | The file is not treated as a video (Appendix B). |
Inside the processed folder | The processed folder directly under a watched folder is where processed files are moved, so its files are not imported. |
| Inside an output folder | Prevents encoded output from being encoded again. This includes output folders specified for individual watched folders. |
| Inside this product's working folder | Prevents temporary files from being imported. |
| Link targets | Junctions and symbolic links inside a watched folder are not followed. This prevents the same file from being imported more than once and files outside the watched folder from being imported. |
| Files already imported | Files are checked against the processed record, and files whose size and modification date match are excluded. For the exception in watched folders with "Re-import" on, see 10.3.1. |
For each watched folder, choose one of the following four ways to handle source files that were encoded successfully. Moving, moving to the Recycle Bin, and deleting take place only when encoding succeeds. Files that fail stay where they are. Imported files remain in the processed record, so putting the same file back does not import it again. For the exception in watched folders with "Re-import" on, see 10.3.1.
| Option | Behavior | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Leave in place (default) | The file is not moved; it is only recorded as processed. Recorded files are not imported again. | Not needed |
| Move to the processed folder | Moves the file to processed directly under the watched folder. Files in subfolders are moved to the same processed folder. If a file with the same name already exists, a number such as _1 is added to the end of the name. This lets you tell which files in the watched folder have not been processed. | Restore manually |
| Move to the Recycle Bin | Moves the file to the Windows Recycle Bin. This may be unavailable (see below). | Restore from the Recycle Bin |
| Delete | Deletes the file. | Not possible |
The result is shown in the status bar, for example "Source: Moved 3 files to the processed folder".
In a watched folder with "Re-import" on, files that have been moved, moved to the Recycle Bin, or deleted are removed from the processed record. When you put the same file back in the watched folder, it is imported at the next scan. The default is off.
While watching is active, the right side of the bottom row of the status bar shows the number of enabled watched folders, for example "1 watched folder". Click it to open the "Folder Watch" page of Settings. If it is not shown, one of the following applies.
When files are imported, the status bar shows a message such as "Imported 3 items from the watched folders."
You can temporarily stop scanning all watched folders. Click "Pause Watch" to the right of "N watched folders" in the bottom row of the status bar, or select "Pause Folder Watch" on the "Encode" menu. To resume, click "Resume Watch" or select "Resume Folder Watch".
| Item | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Status while paused | The status bar shows "Watch paused" instead of the folder count. Click it to open the "Folder Watch" page of Settings. |
| Files added while paused | Not imported until the next scan after watch resumes. Files that were already processed are not imported again. |
| Not affected | The "Enabled" setting of each watched folder, the queue items, running jobs, and the handling of source files that were already imported. |
| Restart | The paused state is saved. Watch stays paused after a restart, and "Folder watch is paused" is recorded in the activity log at startup. |
| Settings export | The paused state is not exported. |
You can pause watch when at least one watched folder is enabled. It is not available when the mode is "Agent" or when your license does not include folder watch. When the product runs as a service, the command is sent to the service, and the service pauses or resumes its own watch. When the resume command is sent to the service, the service checks that the Windows user who performed the operation can write to the output folder of the main window and to the output folders of the enabled watched folders. If that user cannot write to them, watch is not resumed, and the status bar shows "You do not have permission to write to the output folder: X" (X is the path of the output folder). Pausing is available regardless of write permission.
Distributed encoding shares encoding work among multiple PCs on a LAN. It does not use a dedicated server or a cloud service. Set up the controller and the agents, and start the product on each PC.
The PC that assigns jobs is the controller, and a PC that receives and encodes jobs is an agent. When an agent has a free slot, it fetches a job from the controller; while there are no jobs to assign, it checks with the controller every 5 seconds. To process a specific job on a specific PC, specify the assignment target from the right-click menu of the queue list (5.3).
Files are passed between PCs in one of two ways. If an agent can use a shared folder to read the input file directly and write directly to the output folder, it reads and writes the files in place (the fastest method, because no transfer occurs). Otherwise, this product transfers the file itself over the network. The method is determined automatically for each job. If the output path that the agent uses, after replacement with a shared path, is longer than 245 characters, only that job is passed by transfer. The "Notes" column then shows "The output path is too long on the agent, so the output file is handed off in transfer mode.", and a WARN entry is recorded in the activity log. Only one transfer runs at a time, regardless of the number of agents.
E:\Video, specify a "Location on This PC" for the shared path.
When a job is passed to an agent, the path is replaced with the shared path, such as \\PC1\E\Video (11.2.1).
A drive-letter path that is not in any "Location on This PC" is opened as the same path on the agent PC.
If the agent PC does not have that path, the file is transferred; if it does, the agent reads and writes the folder on the agent PC.
You can check which paths can be read and written directly with "Test Connection" in the agent's settings (11.3.1).
Jobs processed by transfer are shown in the "Node" column of the queue list as, for example, "PC2 - Transfer".
To estimate how long transfers take, use "File Transfer Benchmark" under "Benchmark" in Settings (8.3).
Paths in the queue are locations as seen from the controller, such as E:\Video\a.mp4.
When a shared path has a "Location on This PC", files in that location are passed to agents with the beginning of the path replaced by the shared path.
For example, if the location on this PC for the shared path \\PC1\E is E:\, E:\Video\a.mp4 is passed as \\PC1\E\Video\a.mp4.
This applies to input files, output folders, external subtitle files, and watched folders. The queue list and the controller's own reads and writes keep the original paths.
You can open this section from "Manual: Shared paths and locations on this PC" below the shared path list in the settings.
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Shared Paths | The path that agents open. Specify a UNC path such as \\PC1\video. Double-click to edit. |
| Location on This PC | The folder that the shared path points to on this controller. Double-click to edit, or click "Browse" to select a folder. If it is blank, paths are not replaced. |
| User Name | The user name used to access the shared path. |
| Password | The password for the user name. It is masked. Click the eye icon button to the right of the cell to show it, and click the button again to mask it. |
| Status | The result of "Verify". |
Examples for each kind of shared folder follow. PC1 is the name of the controller PC, and NAS is the name of the NAS.
| Shared folder | Shared path | Location on this PC |
|---|---|---|
The folder E:\Video on this PC, shared with the share name Video | \\PC1\Video | E:\Video |
| An administrative share of this PC that points to the whole E drive | \\PC1\E$ | E:\ (filled in automatically) |
| A shared folder on a NAS, with files added to the queue by their UNC paths | \\NAS\Video | Blank |
| A shared folder on a NAS, mapped to network drive V: on this PC, with files added to the queue from V: | \\NAS\Video | V:\ |
For administrative shares of this PC (shares named with a drive letter followed by $, such as \\PC1\D$), the location on this PC is filled in automatically.
For \\PC1\D$\_Tmp, it is D:\_Tmp.
\\192.168.1.10\Video).\\NAS\Video and \\192.168.1.10\Video are treated as different paths, so write the shared path the same way as the paths of the files you add to the queue.Below the rows you added, the list automatically shows the following locations. You do not need to add them; they are treated as shared paths automatically.
| Location shown automatically | Where to change it |
|---|---|
| Output folder | The output folder in the main window. |
| Watched folders | "Folder Watch" in Settings (10.1). Only watched folders with "Enabled" on are shown. |
| Output folders of watched folders | The row's "Output Folder" in "Folder Watch" in Settings. Only the output folders of watched folders with "Enabled" on are shown. |
A UNC path is shown in the "Shared Paths" column, and a drive-letter path is shown in the "Location on This PC" column. That cell cannot be changed. Cells that cannot be changed are shown in gray. Point to the cell to see the setting that the row was added from, for example "Added automatically from the output folder. To change it, change the output folder in the main window." A path that appears in more than one setting is shown in a single row. If a path is the same as a row you added, only the row you added is shown. Rows added automatically cannot be deleted. If you select one and click "Delete", "Rows added automatically cannot be deleted. Change the output folder or watched folder settings." is displayed.
You can enter a value in the other cell: "Location on This PC" for a UNC path row, and "Shared Paths" for a drive-letter path row.
In the "Shared Paths" cell of a drive-letter path row, enter a UNC path that agent PCs can use to open that location.
The values you enter are saved and, as with the rows you added, used to replace the paths passed to agents.
If a drive-letter path is inside the "Location on This PC" of a row you added, the "Shared Paths" cell shows the replaced path that is passed to agents.
For example, if you added a row with the shared path \\PC1\E and the location on this PC E:\, and the output folder is E:\Out, the "Shared Paths" cell of the output folder row shows \\PC1\E\Out. If you enter a value, the value you enter is used.
A drive-letter path whose "Shared Paths" cell is blank is passed to agents unchanged, and agents open the same path on the agent PC (11.1).
Only the values of the rows shown in the list are saved. If a row added automatically is no longer shown, for example because you disabled its watched folder or changed the output folder, the values entered in that row (location on this PC, shared path, user name, and password) are deleted when you click "OK". This prevents credentials that are not shown in the list from being used when you specify the same location again later. Enter the values again after the row is shown again.
If a shared folder requires a user name and password, specify them in the row's "User Name" and "Password". You can also specify them for rows added automatically.
Enter the user name in one of these forms: DOMAIN\user, PCNAME\user, user@domain, or user. A password can be up to 256 characters long.
A user name and password can be specified only for rows whose shared path is a UNC path. In other rows, the "User Name" and "Password" cells are shown in gray.
Windows cannot connect to one server with different user names at the same time. If you specify user names for shared paths on the same server, use the same user name and password for all of them. Otherwise, the settings cannot be saved.
Shared paths without a user name are accessed with the account that runs this product: the logged-on user when the product is started normally, or NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM when it runs as a service.
However, if a shared path on the same server has a user name, those credentials are used.
The controller also uses these user names and passwords for its own access, for example when the output folder or a watched folder is on a NAS. However, the controller does not connect with these credentials to shared paths on this PC (shared paths whose server name is the name or IP address of this PC). Agents receive the credentials from the controller with job assignments and in the shared path connection test (11.3.1), connect to the share with them, and then decide whether to use direct mode or transfer mode. You do not need to enter them on the agents. The controller encrypts the password with a key derived from the auth token before sending it. If the auth token is shorter than 16 characters, for example in a settings file edited by hand, the controller does not pass the credentials to agents and records this in its activity log. If an agent cannot connect, it processes the job in transfer mode and records the failure in its activity log (11.6).
Passwords are encrypted with a key specific to this PC and saved in the settings file. Because the key is shared by all users of this PC, other users who can read the settings file can extract the passwords. For this reason, specify an account that has only the permissions needed to access the shared path. If you reinstall the OS or copy the settings file to another PC, the saved password cannot be decrypted. In that case, enter the password again and click "OK" to save it. When you export settings, shared paths, user names, and passwords are exported (8.11). The passwords are encrypted with a key specific to this product, so they cannot be read by opening the file. However, anyone who imports the file into this product can use the passwords, so do not store the exported file where other people can read it. The PC where you import the file decrypts the passwords and saves them in a form that can be decrypted only on that PC. For credentials without a password in the file, that PC uses its own password for the same shared path and user name, or for a shared path on the same server with the same user name, if it has one. For how the values entered in the output folder and watched folder rows are handled when you export and import, see 8.11.
If the user names and passwords have one of the following problems, clicking "OK" shows the reason in red at the bottom of the window, and the settings are not saved. The shared path or server concerned is shown at the end of the message.

When the controller starts the agent listener, it checks whether each shared path and its location on this PC point to the same folder, and uses only the pairs that it could verify.
Shared paths with a user name are checked after connecting with those credentials.
Administrative shares of this PC are verified by the form of the path.
For other pairs, the controller creates a test file (with a name that starts with .nyxgridencode-map-check-) in the location on this PC, reads it through the shared path, and deletes it immediately.
For locations that cannot be written to, the controller checks whether the names, sizes, and modification times of the files in them look the same through the shared path.
For a pair that could not be verified, files in its location on this PC keep their original paths and are processed by transfer, so that agents do not read or write the same path on the agent PC.
Pairs that could not be verified are checked again every minute, and paths are replaced from the time the pair is verified. The results are recorded in the activity log.
Click "Verify" to run the following checks with the values currently entered and show the results in the "Status" column. The user names and passwords currently entered are also used to actually connect. After the checks finish, the connections made with the entered user names and passwords are disconnected, and the saved user names and passwords are used again.
| Row | What is checked |
|---|---|
| A row with a location on this PC | Whether the shared path and the location on this PC point to the same folder, checked in the same way as when the listener starts. For a row with a user name, the check is made after connecting with those credentials. |
| A row with a user name and no location on this PC | Whether this PC can connect to the shared path with those credentials and read the contents of the folder. |
Other rows are not checked. If there are no rows to check, "No shared path has a location on this PC or a user name." is shown to the right of the button.
If the server name of a row's shared path is the name or IP address of this PC, the user name and password are validated on this PC without connecting to it over the network.
If such a row has no location on this PC, the check then confirms that the corresponding drive or folder exists on this PC for an administrative share (such as \\PC1\D$), or that the account used for the check can read the folder for any other share.
If the share permissions allow only specific users, "This PC cannot access the shared path." can be shown even though agents can connect with the credentials.
For rows checked with credentials, the user name used is shown after the result, for example "Verified | User: nasuser". The counts and the account used for the check are shown to the right of the button.

|---|---|
| Verified | Both point to the same folder. Paths are replaced with this pair. |
| The location on this PC was not found. | The folder does not exist on this PC. Check the path. |
| This PC cannot access the shared path. | This PC cannot read the shared path. The reason follows. Check the share settings and permissions. If the share requires a user name and password, specify them in "User Name" and "Password". |
| This PC cannot access the shared path. The user name or password is incorrect. | This PC cannot connect to the share with the specified user name and password. Check the user name and password. |
| This PC cannot access the shared path. This PC is already connected to the same server with different credentials. NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM).
Shared paths with a user name are checked after connecting with the saved user name and password.
If you have changed the values, click "OK" to save them before verifying.Specify the GPUs and the number of parallel jobs used on an agent in "Encoding" in the agent's Settings. The encoding settings follow the controller's instructions, but the encoder that processes each job is determined by the agent's settings. You do not need to synchronize presets to the agents in advance (11.7).
Click "Test Connection" in the agent section to check, for each path, whether this PC can read and write the controller's shared paths,
output folder, enabled watched folders, and their output folders directly, and to show whether each path uses direct mode or transfer mode.
Paths that input is read from (shared paths and watched folders) are checked for reading, and paths that output is written to (output folders and watched folder outputs) are checked for writing.
Writing is checked by creating an empty test file (with a name that starts with .nyxgridencode-write-check-) and deleting it immediately.
If user names and passwords are specified for the controller's shared paths, the agent connects to the share with those credentials before the check. The agent receives the credentials from the controller, so you do not need to enter them on the agent.
The check works the same way as the check an agent makes when it receives a job.
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Path | The path in the controller's settings. Paths in a "Location on This PC" are shown replaced by the shared path (11.2.1). |
| Purpose | The item in the controller's settings: "Shared Paths", "Output Folder", "Watched Folders", or "Watched Folder Output". If the same path appears in more than one item, all of them are listed. |
| User Name | The user name used to access the UNC path. If a user name and password are specified for the controller's shared path, that user name is shown. Otherwise, the account used for the check is shown (NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM when running as a service). "-" is shown for drive-letter paths and for paths that are not checked ("This path cannot be used." or "Not included in this host's shared paths." in "Details"). |
| Read | For shared paths and watched folders, whether this PC could read the contents of the folder: "OK" or "Failed". "-" for items that are not checked. |
| Write | For output folders and watched folder outputs, whether this PC could write to the folder: "OK" or "Failed". "-" for items that are not checked. |
| Mode | "Direct mode" if every required check is "OK"; otherwise "Transfer mode". |
| Details | Why the path uses transfer mode, or what to check. |
A job is processed in direct mode only when both its input file and its output folder are in paths that use direct mode. If either is in a path that uses transfer mode, the job is processed by transfer. The check uses the values currently entered, so you can try it without saving. Paths in a "Location on This PC" that the controller could not verify are not listed (files in them are processed by transfer). An agent also runs the same check when it connects to the controller, and records the numbers of paths in direct mode and transfer mode, and the paths that use transfer mode with the user name used to access them, in the activity log. While connected, the agent checks again whenever the shared path settings on the controller change, and every 5 minutes. If the results change, the agent records them in the activity log.
| Details shown | Meaning and action |
|---|---|
| Folder not found. | This PC cannot find the path. Check how the path is written, the share settings, and the network connection. |
| Access denied. | There is no permission for the share or the folder. Give the account used for the check permission to read (and, for output folders, to write). Alternatively, in the controller's shared path list, specify a user name and password that can access the share. |
| The user name or password is incorrect. | The agent cannot connect to the share with the user name and password specified for the controller's shared path. Check the user name and password in the controller's settings (11.2.1). |
| This PC is already connected to the same server with different credentials. Disconnect that connection, for example in File Explorer, or specify the server by IP address. | This PC is already connected to the same server with a different user name. Windows cannot connect to one server with different user names at the same time. Disconnect this PC's existing connection to that server, for example in File Explorer, or specify the server in the controller's shared path by IP address. |
| No response within 10 seconds. | The network location does not respond. Check that the computer that shares it is running. |
| This path cannot be used. | The path is in a form that jobs do not accept, such as a relative path. Change the controller's settings to an absolute path. |
| Not included in this host's shared paths. | If "Shared Paths" (in the controller section) in this PC's settings is not empty, the agent reads and writes directly only the paths inside it. Check for values left over from when this PC was used as a controller. |
| Drive-letter path. Make sure it points to the same location as on the controller. | Even in direct mode, the agent reads and writes a drive-letter path as the same path on this PC. Unless this PC maps the same network drive as the controller, specify a "Location on This PC" for the controller's shared path (11.2.1), or change the controller's settings to a UNC path. |
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM).
If you have changed the values, click "OK" to save them before running the check.
An agent that runs as a service also uses the user names and passwords specified for the controller's shared paths. Servers without credentials are accessed with the service account.
The service account does not use the logged-on user's credentials or mapped network drives, so a path that the user's session can read and write may still use transfer mode.
In that case, specify a user name and password for the controller's shared path.Open "View > Node Info". The same content is shown on the controller and on agents. Clicking the mode display in the middle row of the status bar opens the same window. If the notification area icon is present, you can also open it from the icon's right-click menu.
Click "Refresh" to get the latest status immediately. In "Auto-Refresh", select an interval from 1 second to 10 minutes, or select "Do not refresh". Point to a column header to see a description of that column. Click a column header to sort the rows in ascending order, descending order, and then the default order, in the same way as the queue list (3.2.2). In the default order, the controller is in the first row and the agents follow from the second row.
Click "Select Columns", or right-click a column header, to select the columns to display. Mode, Host Name, and Connection are always displayed. The selection is saved in the settings, and the same columns are displayed the next time you open the window.
By default, seven columns are hidden: IP Address, Connected At, Performance Ratio, Max Jobs, Version, Service, and Shared Paths. To check these values, double-click a row to open the node details (11.4.4). If you have saved a column selection with "Select Columns", the saved columns are displayed instead of the default columns.
You can resize the window regardless of the column widths. To change the width of a column, drag the boundary between column headers. If the columns are wider than the window, the table scrolls horizontally. The window size is saved in the settings when you close the window, and the window opens at the same size next time. The default size is 1200 x 420 pixels.
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mode | The mode of the PC. |
| Host Name | The name of the PC. For agents, the "Display Name" from the settings is shown. |
| IP Address | The IP address of the PC. |
| Connection | "Running" for the controller (or this PC itself when standalone), and "Connected", "Disconnected", or "Auto-stopped" for agents. An agent that stops normally (this product exits, the service stops, the mode is changed, or Windows goes to sleep) becomes "Disconnected" immediately. An agent that stops for auto shutdown (11.5.4) becomes "Auto-stopped" immediately and returns to "Connected" when it connects again. An agent that stops responding because of a power loss, a network failure, or a similar cause becomes "Disconnected" after 60 seconds. A PC that has connected once stays in the list after it disconnects. You can delete rows that are no longer needed with "Delete" on the right-click menu (11.4.2). A "▲" mark is shown in this cell in the warning color if the node's version differs from the controller's, if a shared path uses transfer mode, or if a drive-letter path needs checking. Point to the cell to see the reason. |
| Connected At | The date and time when the agent connected to the controller (YYYY/MM/DD HH:MM:SS). If the agent reconnects after it is judged disconnected, this is the time it reconnected. For the controller, this is the time this product started. |
| Performance Ratio | The value declared in the agent's settings, used as the weight for job assignment. For the controller it is 100, or "-" for "Controller Only", which does not encode on that PC. |
| Planned | The number of waiting items to be assigned to the PC under the current assignment plan. |
| Max Jobs | The maximum number of jobs that can be processed at the same time. It is determined by the number of parallel jobs in that PC's settings. |
| Running | The number of jobs currently being processed. The value in parentheses is the total number of jobs started since the first connection (for example, 2 (20)). For the controller, the value in parentheses is the total number of jobs started on this PC. For "Controller Only", "-" is shown. For agents running an earlier version that does not send the total, only the number of jobs being processed is shown. The total in parentheses includes jobs being processed, jobs canceled and returned to waiting, and jobs reassigned to another PC, so it may not match the sum of the completed and failed totals. |
| Completed / Failed | The number of jobs completed and failed since the connection time. The value in parentheses is the total since the first connection (for example, 5 (20)). For the controller, the value in parentheses is the total number of jobs processed on this PC. For "Controller Only", "-" is shown. |
| Total FPS | The total FPS of the jobs running on the PC. It is 0 when no job is running. |
| CPU | The total CPU usage of the jobs running on the PC. |
| GPU VD/3D/VE | The GPU usage of the PC, shown in the order of decode (VD), 3D, and encode (VE). |
| Version | The product version of the PC. It is shown in the warning color when it differs from the controller. Agents running an earlier version show "-". |
| Service | Whether this product runs as a Windows service on the PC (Yes / No). Agents running an earlier version show "-". |
| Shared Paths | The number of shared paths by transfer method, as checked by the agent (11.3.1). The agent checks the paths when it connects to the controller, when the shared path settings on the controller change, and every 5 minutes. If any path uses transfer mode, or a path in direct mode is a drive-letter path, the cell is shown in the warning color. Point to it to see the check time, the account, and, for each of those paths, its purpose and the reason or what to check. For UNC paths, the user name used to access the path is also shown. |
| Auto Shutdown | The current auto shutdown status of the PC. It is the same as the status shown on the Settings screen (for example, "Waiting for the queue to finish", "Waiting | 4 minutes left", or "Warning | 45 seconds left"). Each agent reports its status to the controller every 15 seconds, and the controller counts down the remaining time from when it received the report. The controller row shows the status of the controller's own auto shutdown (8.5.1). Disconnected agents and agents running an earlier version show "-". |
An agent also shows the same list as the controller (the controller and every connected agent) while it is connected to the controller. The agent gets the list from the controller every few seconds, so it can lag a few seconds behind what the controller shows. While the agent cannot reach the controller, only two rows are shown, one for this PC itself and one for the controller it connects to, and the connection status is "Error" or "Not connected".
The node list in the middle row of the status bar works the same way. While the listener is open, the controller shows "Controller (PC1:5555)" followed by the nodes that encode, for example "PC1 (0/6) | PC2 (0/1)". An agent shows "Agent Connected (PC1:5555)" followed by the same node list as the controller. While the agent cannot reach the controller, only this PC itself is shown.
Total FPS, CPU, and GPU show "-" for disconnected agents and for a "Controller Only" PC, which does not encode. When an agent runs a different version from the controller, the right end of the bottom row of the status bar shows "N agents with a different version". Agents can connect as long as the distribution protocol version is the same, but keep the controller and the agents on the same version so that they behave the same way.
When an agent stops responding, or when an agent processing a job stops normally, the controller returns the job to "Waiting" and runs it again locally or on another agent. When the agent stops normally, the job is returned to "Waiting" immediately, without waiting 60 seconds. When a job fails on an agent, the controller does the same for transfer failures and failures that cannot be classified (automatic retry, up to 2 times). What happened is shown in the "Notes" column of the queue list on both the controller and the agent. The "Notes" column shows the history, the reason for the failure (failed rows only), and notices in this order, separated by "|".
The controller shows the following history in the "Notes" column. The events are listed from the left in the order they occurred.
| Text | Meaning |
|---|---|
| No response from PC2 for 63 sec: returned to waiting | The agent processing the job stopped responding, so the job was reclaimed and returned to "Waiting". |
| PC2 stopped: returned to waiting | The agent processing the job stopped because this product exited, the service stopped, the mode was changed, or Windows went to sleep, so the job was reclaimed and returned to "Waiting". |
| Not in the running jobs of PC2: returned to waiting | The job was not among the jobs that the agent reported as running, so it was reclaimed. |
| Could not send the assignment to PC2: returned to waiting | The assignment could not be delivered to the agent, so the job was reclaimed. |
| Rerun locally / Rerun on PC2 | Shows the node on which the reclaimed job was run again. |
| Failed on PC2: reason | Automatic retry attempt 1 | The job failed in the transfer or for a reason that cannot be classified, so it was retried automatically (up to 2 times). The number increases with each attempt. |
| Accepted the late result from PC2 | After the job was reclaimed, a successful result arrived from the agent before the rerun started, so that result was used. |
| Discarded the result from PC2: reason | After the job was reclaimed, a failure result arrived from the agent. The rerun continues, so that result is not used. The reason is the one the agent reported. |
| Discarded the result from PC2: rerun already started | After the job was reclaimed, a successful result arrived from the agent, but the rerun had already started, so that result is not used. |
On the agent, a failed row shows the reason for the failure and the result of the report to the controller. If the encode succeeded but the output could not be transferred to the controller, "The encode succeeded, but the output could not be transferred to the controller." is followed by the reason the transfer failed.
| Text | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Cannot connect to the controller. | The reason the transfer failed. Check that the controller PC is running and connected to the network. |
| Communication with the controller timed out. | The reason the transfer failed. The connection was lost during the transfer. |
| The controller has no assignment for this job. | The reason the transfer failed. The controller has already reclaimed the job. |
| The controller has reassigned the job to another node. | The reason the transfer failed. The job is processed on another node. |
| Reported the failure to the controller. | The controller received the failure report. Transfer failures and failures that cannot be classified are retried automatically by the controller (up to 2 times). |
| Result not used: the controller reclaims the job and reruns it. | The controller has already reclaimed the job and runs it again locally or on another node. |
| Result not used: the job was canceled on the controller. | The job was canceled on the controller. |
| Could not report the result to the controller. If the report did not arrive, the controller reclaims the job and reruns it. | It could not be confirmed that the report arrived. If it did not arrive, the controller reclaims the job because the agent stopped responding. |
If the same job is assigned to this PC again, for example by an automatic retry, the reason for the previous failure and the result of the report are moved to the history, followed by "Rerun locally", before the job is processed. Even after the job completes, the "Notes" column shows why the previous attempt failed.
For example, if agent PC2 finished encoding but could not transfer the output to the controller, and the controller then ran the job again locally and completed it, the rows are shown as follows.
| PC | Status | Node | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controller | Completed | Local | No response from PC2 for 63 sec: returned to waiting | Rerun locally | Discarded the result from PC2: The encode succeeded, but the output could not be transferred to the controller. Cannot connect to the controller. |
| Agent PC2 | Failed | Local - Transfer | The encode succeeded, but the output could not be transferred to the controller. Cannot connect to the controller. | Result not used: the controller reclaimed the job and reruns it. |
The history remains after you restart this product. When you run the item again yourself with "Encode" on the right-click menu or with "Retry Failed", the history is cleared and recording starts over. If you change the preset of a completed or failed item with "Preset" on the right-click menu, the item also returns to "Waiting" and the history is cleared. The detailed times and events are recorded in the activity logs of the controller and the agent.
An agent that has connected once stays in the Node Info list after it disconnects, so that its job totals and MAC addresses (11.5.3) are kept. To delete a row that is no longer needed, follow these steps.
From Node Info on the controller, you can send the following commands to a connected agent. The commands are available when the mode is "Controller + Encoder" or "Controller Only" and the license supports agents (Pro or higher).
| Command | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Reconnect | The agent notifies the controller that it is leaving, disconnects, and then connects again immediately. On reconnecting, it checks the shared paths again and reports its MAC addresses, and its Connected At time is updated. Use this when the displayed information stops updating, or to check the connection again. |
| Shut Down | Shuts down the agent PC. If an app with unsaved documents blocks the shutdown, the shutdown remains pending. |
| Force Shut Down | Closes running apps without prompting and shuts down the agent PC. Unsaved work on the agent PC is lost. |
| Restart | Restarts the agent PC. If an app with unsaved documents blocks the restart, the restart remains pending. |
To show the details of a node in a separate window, double-click its row in Node Info, or right-click the row and select "Details". This also works for the controller row. The window is updated at the Node Info auto-refresh interval. Click "Refresh" to get the latest status immediately. Only one window can be open per node. Closing Node Info also closes the node details windows.
| Tab | Contents |
|---|---|
| Overview | The values of the Node Info columns except Mode and Host Name, plus the following. The host name is shown in the window title. MAC Address: the MAC addresses used for Wake-on-LAN (11.5.3). Last Response: the number of seconds since the controller last received a response from the agent. If no response is received for more than 60 seconds, the agent is treated as disconnected. Response Time: the round-trip time of the status check, in milliseconds. Time Since Startup or Resume: the time since Windows started or resumed from sleep, hibernation, or Fast Startup (for example, "2d 07:26"). Unlike the OS uptime, this value starts from 0 after a Fast Startup boot. Success Rate: completed / (completed + failed) for the current connection, with the total in parentheses. You can select and copy the values. |
| Jobs | The queue items processed by the node (file name, status, progress, FPS, elapsed time, remaining time, speed, and preset) and a summary. The summary is based on completed jobs: total video length, total input and output size with the size reduction, average time per job, average speed, and the number of CPU fallbacks. The total input and output size and the size reduction are calculated only from jobs whose input and output sizes are both known. Speed is the video length divided by the processing time. Use the buttons at the top to filter by Running, Completed, or Failed. Double-click a row to show the job log, or point to a row to show its remarks. For the controller row, the tab shows the jobs processed on this PC. |
| Shared Paths | The purpose, mode, user name, and details of every shared path checked by the agent (11.3.1). Paths in transfer mode and drive-letter paths that need checking are shown in the warning color. For agents running an earlier version, only the paths that need attention are listed. |
| Environment | Shown in two groups, "PC" and "External Tools". The PC group shows the OS, CPU, number of logical processors, memory, each GPU and its driver version, available encoders, free space on the work folder drive, and the link speed of the NIC used to connect to the controller. GPUs are numbered "GPU 1", "GPU 2", and so on, and each driver version uses the same number. Virtual display adapters (adapters with "Virtual" in the name) are not listed. External tool versions that differ from those on the controller are shown in the warning color. |
| Settings | Shown in four groups: "Encoding" (encoding method and performance ratio), "GPU Encoding" (the GPUs used and the parallel jobs for each GPU), "CPU Encoding" (parallel jobs and threads), and "Auto Shutdown". The performance ratio is the same value as on the Overview tab. GPUs are numbered "GPU 1", "GPU 2", and so on, in the order they are used. Agents running an earlier version do not report parallel jobs for each GPU, so "-" is shown. This tab is read-only. To change these settings, use the Settings screen on that PC. |
| History | The date and time of connections, response timeouts (with the number of jobs returned to Waiting), disconnections after a leave notice, auto stops, Wake-on-LAN requests, and command requests. Entries are listed newest first. Up to 200 entries are saved per node and are kept when the controller restarts. |
Wake-on-LAN starts the PCs of disconnected agents from the controller. Auto shutdown shuts down, force shuts down, puts to sleep, or hibernates a PC after the queue finishes.
| Function | Configured on | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Wake-on-LAN | Controller | Sends a wake request over the LAN to the PC of a disconnected agent. Requests are sent in three cases: when you select "Wake" in Node Info, when encoding starts, and at regular intervals while encoding is running (11.5.2). |
| Auto shutdown | Agent | Shuts down, force shuts down, puts to sleep, or hibernates the agent PC after the controller's queue has stayed finished for the wait time (11.5.4). |
| Controller auto shutdown | Controller | Runs one of the same four actions on the controller PC after the queue has stayed finished for the wait time and all connected agents have disconnected. Configure it on the "Auto Run" page (8.5.1). |
To start an agent PC with Wake-on-LAN, configure the following on the agent PC. Item names vary by PC model, NIC, and driver.
| Where | What to set |
|---|---|
| BIOS/UEFI | Enable Wake-on-LAN (wake from the LAN). This setting is required to start the PC from the powered-off state. |
| NIC properties | In Device Manager, open the properties of the NIC. On the "Power Management" tab, select "Allow this device to wake the computer". If the "Advanced" tab has an item such as "Wake on Magic Packet", enable it. |
| Windows Fast Startup | If the PC does not start from the shut-down state, open "Power Options" in Control Panel, select "Choose what the power buttons do", and clear "Turn on fast startup". This does not affect waking from sleep or hibernation. |
| Network connection | Connect the PC to the same subnet as the controller over a wired LAN. Wake-on-LAN often does not work over Wi-Fi. |
The wake request (magic packet) is sent over UDP to port 9. The destinations are 255.255.255.255 and the subnet broadcast address of each NIC on the controller PC. The request does not reach other subnets across a router.
After configuring the PC, connect the agent to the controller once so that it reports its MAC addresses (11.5.3). Then shut down the agent PC and check that "Wake" in Node Info starts it. If you use sleep or hibernation as the auto shutdown action, also check that the PC wakes from that state.
The controller sends wake requests in the following three cases. Wake-on-LAN is available when the mode is "Controller + Encoder" or "Controller Only". Requests are sent to disconnected agents whose MAC address is known.
| Case | Setting | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| "Wake" in Node Info | - | In Node Info, right-click an agent row and select "Wake". The request is sent after you click "Wake" in the confirmation message. "Wake" is available only for disconnected agents whose MAC address is known. The result is shown in the status bar of the main window, for example "Sent a wake request to PC2.", and recorded in the activity log. |
| When encoding starts | "Wake disconnected agents when encoding starts (Wake-on-LAN)". Off by default. | When encoding starts, a wake request is sent to disconnected agents. The result is recorded only in the activity log. It is not shown on the status bar, so the encoding start message stays visible there. |
| Resending while running | "Resend Wake-on-LAN while encoding" and "Resend interval". Off by default. The interval is 10 minutes by default (range: 1 - 120 minutes). | While encoding is running, a wake request is sent at each resend interval as long as at least one item is waiting and an agent is disconnected. Requests are not sent while encoding is paused (5.4). This setting is independent of the setting for when encoding starts, so you can use either one alone. |
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Reported | An agent reports its MAC addresses when it connects to the controller. Up to 4 addresses are saved, with the address of the NIC used to connect to the controller first. The saved addresses remain after the controller restarts, so wake requests can be sent to any agent that has connected once. |
| Set manually | Select "Set MAC Address" on the Node Info right-click menu to enter the MAC address (for example, AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF; separate up to 4 addresses with commas). Use ":" or "-" as the separator, or enter the 12 digits without separators. A manually set address takes priority over the address reported by the agent. Leave the field blank and click "OK" to use the reported address again. You can select and copy the "Reported" value on the screen. Click "Copy" to copy all reported addresses as a comma-separated list, which you can paste into the field and edit. |
| Display | Point to the IP address cell in Node Info to see the addresses. Addresses are displayed with ":" separators. A manually set address is shown with "Set manually". |
| Delete | Deleting the records of a disconnected agent also deletes its reported and manually set MAC addresses (11.4.2). |
Manually set MAC addresses are saved in the settings and are included in "Mode" when you export the settings (8.11).
When the controller's queue has stayed finished for the wait time, the agent PC performs the selected action: shut down, force shut down, sleep, or hibernate. Configure this in Settings on the agent PC, at the bottom of the "Agent" group on the "Mode" page.
| Item | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| When queue finishes | Do nothing | Select "Do nothing", "Only when started by Wake-on-LAN", or "Always". With "Do nothing", auto shutdown is not performed. |
| Action | Shut down | Select "Shut down", "Force shut down", "Sleep", or "Hibernate" (see the table below). |
| Wait time | 10 minutes | Range: 1 - 120 minutes. The action runs when the queue has stayed finished for this time. |
| Warning | 60 seconds | Range: 0 - 600 seconds. Before the action, a window shows the remaining seconds and "Cancel". With 0, no warning is shown. |
| Wake request to connection | 15 minutes | Range: 1 - 120 minutes. Used for the "Only when started by Wake-on-LAN" condition (11.5.5). |
| OS startup to connection | 15 minutes | Range: 1 - 120 minutes. Used for the "Only when started by Wake-on-LAN" condition (11.5.5). |
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Shut down | A normal Windows shutdown. An application with unsaved documents may stop the shutdown. In that case, the shutdown remains pending, and this product does not switch to a forced shutdown. If Windows has not shut down 10 minutes after the request, the shutdown is treated as canceled, the agent starts accepting jobs again, and this is recorded in the activity log. The conditions are checked again when the queue finishes after this agent has received at least one job. |
| Force shut down | Closes open applications and always shuts down. Unsaved work is lost. |
| Sleep | Puts the PC to sleep. If the PC does not support sleep, it is shut down instead, and this is recorded in the activity log. |
| Hibernate | Hibernates the PC. If the PC does not support hibernation, it is shut down instead, and this is recorded in the activity log. |
Shutdown and forced shutdown do not install pending Windows updates. Whether Fast Startup is used depends on the Windows settings of that PC. If a Fast Startup shutdown cannot be requested, a full shutdown is requested instead, and this is recorded in the activity log.
When the queue is considered finished
The queue is considered finished when all of the following conditions have been met for the wait time.
The action does not run while the agent cannot connect to the controller. It also does not run when the controller is an earlier version that does not support auto shutdown.
The conditions are checked again when a PC that auto shutdown put to sleep or hibernation resumes, and when Windows starts with the service process still running after a Fast Startup shutdown. The count of received jobs returns to 0, so the action does not run immediately after the PC resumes.
When the PC is considered started by Wake-on-LAN
If "When queue finishes" is set to "Only when started by Wake-on-LAN", the PC is considered to have been started by Wake-on-LAN when both of the following are true.
Skipping while the PC is in use
Warning and cancellation
The warning window appears in front of other windows and shows the remaining seconds and "Cancel". The Windows warning sound plays once when it appears. You can use other windows while the warning window is shown.
Status display and what the controller shows
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The listener does not open on the controller | Check the reason shown in red in the center of the bottom row of the status bar. If it is "The agent listener cannot start. Specify an output folder.", specify the output folder in the main window or the output folder of a watched folder. If it is "Could not start the agent listener:", check the reason that follows it. A port that is in use by another program is also reported here. If it is "Register a license key to use agents.", you need to register a license. |
| The agent's status bar shows "Agent Error" | Check that the PC name or IP address entered in "Controller" and the port are correct, and that this product is running on the controller with the listener open. The agent's activity log records why it cannot connect. |
| An agent disconnects during encoding | If the agent's activity log records "Agent: could not resolve the name of controller PC1:5555; connected using the previously used address 192.168.1.10" or "Agent: could not connect to some addresses of controller PC1:5555; connected using 192.168.1.10", name resolution for the controller's PC name is failing, or DNS is returning old or unreachable addresses. Assign a fixed IP address to the controller, and enter that IP address in "Controller" on the agent. When an IP address is specified, name resolution is not used. If the agent cannot connect, the line after "Agent: cannot connect to controller PC1:5555" records the reason for each address it tried. If the agent runs with administrator rights (including when it runs as a service) and a PC name is entered in "Controller", the agent clears the DNS cache when it cannot connect (the same as ipconfig /flushdns, at most once every 10 minutes). The log then records "Agent: cleared the DNS cache because controller PC1 cannot be reached". If the agent does not run with administrator rights, "Agent: not running with administrator rights, so the DNS cache is not cleared" is recorded once. In that case, run ipconfig /flushdns in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. |
| Agents do not appear in the list | Check that Windows Firewall on the controller allows inbound TCP connections to the listening port (the "Port" setting, 5555 by default). If you registered the service, the allow rule "NyXGridEncode Service" is created at registration. If you start the application normally, allow access when Windows asks for permission. |
| The agent's log records "rejected the auth token" | If the auth tokens on the two sides differ by even one character, they cannot connect. Copy the value on the controller and paste it. |
| The agent's log records "the protocol version differs" | The distribution protocol versions of the controller and the agent differ. Use the same version of this product on both. |
| The agent's log records "cannot verify the response" | Check that the auth tokens match and that the controller address is correct. |
| Connected, but no jobs are assigned | Check that "Start Encoding" has been run on the controller. Jobs are assigned only while encoding is running on the controller. |
| Jobs are processed by transfer ("- Transfer" in the "Node" column) | Use "Test Connection" in the agent's settings to see, for each path, whether it uses direct mode or transfer mode and why (11.3.1). The agent's activity log also records the results of the check when it connects and when the results change. |
| The agent's log records "could not connect to the shared path with the credentials" | The agent cannot connect to the share with the user name and password specified for the controller's shared path, so the job is processed in transfer mode. If the reason at the end of the entry is "The user name or password is incorrect", check the user name and password of the controller's shared path (11.2.1). If it is "Already connected to the same server with different credentials", disconnect the agent PC's existing connection to that server, for example in File Explorer, or specify the server in the controller's shared path by IP address. |
| Adding PCs does not increase assignments | The license's agent limit may have been reached. Check the "Agent" value in the License window. PCs become eligible for assignment in the order in which they connected, up to the limit. PCs beyond the limit can connect but are not assigned any jobs. |
You do not need to synchronize presets to the agents in advance. When the controller assigns a job, it passes encoding instructions that reflect the contents of the job's preset and the per-job settings (6.5, 7.1, 7.2). The agent encodes according to those instructions and does not refer to its own presets. Even if the agent has a preset with the same name and different contents, the result is not affected.
| Item | Determined by |
|---|---|
| Encoding settings (container, video, audio, subtitles, advanced settings, crop, trim, and track selection) | The controller's preset and the per-job settings |
| Encoding method (GPU / CPU), GPUs used and their parallel jobs, threads for CPU encoding, file split, and frame split | "Encoding" in the agent's Settings (8.2) |
| Fonts used for burning in subtitles | The fonts installed on the PC that performs the encoding (6.4) |
Presets themselves are not synchronized automatically. Adding or changing a preset on the controller does not change the preset list on the agents. To make the agent's presets the same as the controller's, click "Get from Controller" in the Edit Presets window on the agent. This button is available when the mode is "Agent". Getting the controller's presets replaces all presets on the agent. Before this happens, the confirmation "Replaces this host's presets with the controller's presets. All presets on this host will be lost." is displayed; click "Download" to get the presets. The retrieved presets are finalized when you click "OK" in the Edit Presets window. Export any presets you need to keep beforehand.
When this product is registered as a Windows service, encoding continues even after you close the window. It keeps running after you sign out, and it starts automatically when Windows starts. This suits long batch runs that you leave running while you are away from the PC.
From then on, if you start the application while the service is running, it connects to the service instead of running on its own. The window shows the service's queue and passes your operations to the service. Because the service performs the encoding, encoding continues even if you close the window. The mode display and node list in the status bar, and Node Info (11.4), also show the state of the service. If the service is stopped, the application runs on its own as before. If you selected "Register as a Windows service" during installation, the service is already registered and started.
"Status" under "Service" in Settings shows "Not registered", "Stopped", "Running", or "Unknown".
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Register | Registers the service and starts it. It also creates a setting that starts the notification area icon at logon (for all users) and the Windows Firewall rule "NyXGridEncode Service", which allows connections from agents. The service starts automatically when Windows starts, and restarts after 5 seconds if it terminates abnormally. Cannot be clicked while the service is running. |
| Delete | Stops and removes the service. Any encoding in progress is interrupted. Settings and the queue are kept. The logon setting and the firewall rule created at registration are also removed. |
| Restart | Stops the service and starts it again. Any encoding in progress is interrupted. |
"Delete" and "Restart" cannot be clicked when the service is not registered. All of these operations require administrator rights.
tools folder, programs replaced by those users also run with LocalSystem privileges.
Only administrators can write to the installer's default installation folder (Program Files). If you register the service in a folder extracted from the ZIP file, check the permissions on the folder. From a Command Prompt running as administrator, you can run NyXGridEncode.exe with the following options.
NyXGridEncode.exe --service-install
NyXGridEncode.exe --service-start
NyXGridEncode.exe --service-uninstall
NyXGridEncode.exe --service-stop
NyXGridEncode.exe --service-restart
| Option | Action |
|---|---|
--service-install | Registers the service. Does not start it. When the mode is not "Agent" and the service is not registered yet, a Standard or higher license is required. |
--service-start | Starts the service. |
--service-uninstall | Stops and removes the service. |
--service-stop | Stops the service. |
--service-restart | Stops the service and starts it again. When the mode is not "Agent", a Standard or higher license is required. |
After registering with --service-install, run --service-start.
Only one option can be specified at a time. The result is not displayed on screen.
Check whether the operation succeeded with the exit code (0 for success, 1 for failure) and the activity log.
When the license does not allow the operation, the exit code is 1 and the reason is recorded in the activity log. --service-start, --service-stop, and --service-uninstall do not check the license.
If the options cannot be read, for example when you specify more than one, the reason and the usage are shown on screen and the exit code is 2. Use --help to display the usage (Appendix C).
There is only one settings file, and both the window and the service read it (for its location, see Appendix A). When you save settings in the window, the service is notified to reload them, so you do not need to restart the service. The same applies when you register or release a license and when you download external tools.
Check the license status in "Help > License". If you replace a device, use this product offline, or see "Running within the free limits", refer to the relevant section of this chapter. For trial licenses, see 13.6.
Open "Help > License". "Registered Licenses" at the top lists the licenses you have registered, and "License Status" at the bottom shows the current license status and entitlements.
| Item | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Edition | The product name of the registered main license. "Pro Trial" for a trial license. "Not registered" if no license is registered. |
| Status | "Verified", "Pending", "Invalid", or "Not registered". For "Pending", the number of days that the current license remains usable is also shown. "Invalid" means this product is running within the free limits. |
| License ID | The 22-digit license ID. Use it when you contact support. |
| Expires | The expiration date for a license with an expiration, or "Never" for a license without one. |
| Agent | The number of agents that can be used for distributed encoding. "Unavailable" means distributed encoding cannot be used. "Unlimited" is shown for a license with no limit on the number of agents. |
| Multi-GPU | The number of GPUs that can be used at the same time. While the mode is "Agent", "Unlimited" is shown even without a registered license. |
| Jobs Allowed | The number of items that the queue can hold at one time. While the mode is "Agent", "Unlimited" is shown even without a registered license. |
| Folder Watch | "Available" or "Unavailable". |
"Registered Licenses" shows each license's number, type, edition, license key, license ID, status, and expiration date. The first row is the main license, and the second and later rows are the add-on licenses you have added. The buttons in the window work as follows.
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Register | Registers a license key that you enter (2.3). |
| Revalidate | Queries the license server and refreshes the status. |
| Release | Releases the license selected in the list. For the main row, the device registration is released; for an add-on row, the attachment is removed (13.3, 13.4). |
| Copy | Copies the contents of both tables to the clipboard as text. You can paste it when you contact support. The license key is included, so handle the text with care. |
The license is verified over the internet when this product starts and once a day after that. If the verification deadline passes without the license being verified, the status becomes "Pending". While the status is pending (during the grace period), no features are restricted. The status bar shows "The license has not been verified. The current license remains usable for N more days."
When the grace period ends, the status becomes "Invalid", and the entitlements are reduced to the free limits. However, encoding itself does not stop. Once the PC is connected to the internet, the license is verified again automatically within an hour and restored. To verify it immediately, click "Revalidate" in the License window.
License messages are shown on the left side of the bottom row of the status bar when there are no messages from other operations.
| Message | Status and action |
|---|---|
| The license has not been verified. The current license remains usable for N more days. | Pending (in the grace period). Check the internet connection. |
| The license is not valid. Running within the free limits. | Invalid. Causes include the end of the grace period and license expiration. Connect to the internet and click "Revalidate" in the License window. If the server returns a reason, that reason is displayed instead of this message. |
| Running within the free limits. The queue holds up to 20 items. | Not registered. Register a license key (2.3). |
| Trial license: N days left | A trial license is in use. When less than 24 hours remain, "N hours left" is shown, and when less than 1 hour remains, "less than 1 hour left" is shown (13.6). |
| The trial license has expired. Running within the free limits. | The trial license has expired. Register the key for a purchased license to use the features of that license (13.6.1). When the mode is "Agent", "The trial license has expired." is shown instead. |
| A message stating that this device was released | The registration of this device has been released, for example because it was replaced by another device, the license key was reissued, or the license was transferred. To keep using it, register the license key again (13.3). |
If the old PC can still be used, select the main row in the License window on the old PC and click "Release". In the confirmation "Releases this device from the license.", click "Release". That PC returns to the free limits, and one device slot becomes available.
If you cannot release it, for example because the PC has failed, register the license key on the new PC. If the device limit has been reached, a message containing "Select an unused device and replace it." is displayed, and the "Registered Devices" list appears at the bottom of the license key registration window. Check the name and last-used date of each device, select the device to release, and click "Replace".
Enter an add-on license key using the same "Register" button after you have registered the main license. You do not need to choose between main and add-on; the type is determined automatically from the key. When an add-on is added, "Add-on added. Agents: N PCs" is displayed, and in the list of registered licenses, the "Type" column shows "Add-on" (the main license row shows "Main"). "Agent" under "License Status" shows the total number of agents for the main and add-on licenses combined.
To use an add-on license on another device or with another license, select the add-on row in the list and click "Release". An add-on license whose attachment has been removed can be registered again on another device or with another license.
If you register a different main license key on a PC that already has a main license registered, a confirmation is displayed stating that the current main license will be released and replaced with the new main license. Click "Switch" to release the device registration of the current main license and register with the new main license. When this completes, "Switched." is displayed, and one device slot of the released license becomes available. If you enter the key of the same main license, it is registered again.
For notes on switching from a purchased license to a trial license, see 13.6.
A trial license lets you use the same features as Pro for a limited period. Apply for one on the "Apply for a Trial License" page of the official website. To open the official website, click "Official website" in "Help > About". You cannot apply from within the app.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Features | The same as Pro. "Edition" in the License window shows "Pro Trial". |
| PCs | One PC. |
| Trial period | Starts when the license key is issued, not when it is registered on a PC. The expiration date and time are shown on the issue page and in the email. After registration, check "Expires" in the License window. |
| Issue limit | One per person. If you apply with an email address that has already received a trial license, no new trial license is issued. |
| Registration limit | A different trial license cannot be registered on a PC where a trial license has been registered. The same trial license can be registered again. |
| Add-on licenses | Cannot be added. |
| Eligible regions | Residents of EU member states, EEA member states, and the United Kingdom cannot apply. |
While a trial license is in use, the remaining trial period is shown on the left side of the bottom row of the status bar when there is no other message. It is shown as "Trial license: N days left" while 24 hours or more remain, "Trial license: N hours left" when less than 24 hours remain, and "Trial license: less than 1 hour left" when less than 1 hour remains. While the status is "Pending" (13.2), it is shown after "The license has not been verified."
If you enter a different trial license key on a PC where a trial license has been registered, the key entry window shows "A trial license has already been used on this PC. Enter the key for a purchased license.", and the key is not registered.
When a trial license expires, this product runs within the free limits (2.4). "Status" in the License window changes to "Invalid", and the status bar and the message in the License window show "The trial license has expired. Running within the free limits." When the mode is "Agent", the status bar shows "The trial license has expired." Your settings, presets, and queue are kept. Register the key for a purchased license to use the features of that license.
If this product runs as a Windows service (12.1) in a mode other than "Agent", the service stops as follows.
This chapter is organized by symptom so you can go straight to the relevant section. If none of the items apply, check the logs. Their locations are described in 14.8.
Most causes are shown or recorded in one of the following four places.
| Location | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Tooltip on "Start Encoding" | The reasons encoding cannot start. When the button is disabled, point to it to see them after "Cannot start:". If there are several reasons, each is shown on its own line. The same information also appears when you point to "Start Encoding" on the "Encode" menu. |
| Status bar | The left end of the bottom row shows the result of the last operation. To see messages that are no longer shown and the activity log, click the message to open the Log Viewer (records since the app started). When an item encoded on this PC fails, a summary of the failure is also shown at that moment. Red text in the center of the bottom row is a message that stays visible even when you perform other operations. Examples include the reason the agent listener cannot start and cautions shown when encoding starts (such as when the configured encoder cannot be used and another encoder processes the items). |
| "Notes" column in the list | Events that occurred for that item, such as the history of reclaims from agents, reruns, and automatic retries (11.4.1), the reason for the failure on failed rows, the reason it switched to the CPU, settings that were not applied, or problems found when the output was verified. If the text does not fit in the column, point to it to see the full text. |
| Row log (double-click) | The output from the encoder. Each line starts with the date and time it was recorded. The direct reason for a failure is recorded at the end. Double-clicking the "Audio" or "Subtitles" column opens the track selection window instead of the log. |
If "Start Encoding" is disabled, point to the button to see the reason. One of the following appears after "Cannot start:". In the table, X and Y stand for actual folder paths, and N for a number of items.
| Reason shown | Action |
|---|---|
| External tools are missing. Download them from Tools > External Tools. | The programs used for encoding are missing. In most cases, FFmpeg has not been installed. Get it by following the steps in 2.2. |
| ffprobe is missing. Download it from Tools > External Tools. | The mode is "Controller Only", and ffprobe, which is used to read media info, is missing. ffprobe is included with FFmpeg, so get FFmpeg. |
| No output folder is specified. | Some of the items to encode are written to the output folder set in the main window. Specify the "Output Folder" at the top of the window. If every item is written to the output folder of its watched folder, encoding can start even when this folder is not specified (5.2). |
| The output folder "X" is not an absolute path. Specify an absolute path. | The output folder box contains a relative path, such as out or D:. Select the folder with "Browse", or enter a path that starts with a drive or a network share, such as D:\Encoded or \\server\share. |
| Cannot interpret the output folder path "X". Specify it again. | The path contains characters that cannot be used. Select the folder again with "Browse". |
| The watched folder "X" is inside the output folder. The encoded output would be imported again, so specify a different path. | An enabled watched folder is inside the output folder. Change the output folder to a different location. |
| The output folder "X" is inside the watched folder "Y", which includes subfolders. Clear "Include Subfolders" or specify a different output folder. | Under "Folder Watch" in Settings, clear "Include Subfolders" for that watched folder, or change the output folder. |
| The installed FFmpeg does not support H.265. | Some waiting items use an H.265 preset, but the installed FFmpeg cannot output H.265 on the CPU, and H.265 cannot be output on the GPU either. Get FFmpeg again from "Tools > External Tools", or set the encoding method to "GPU Encoding" and use a GPU that can output H.265. |
| The agent listener is not open. | The mode is "Controller Only", and the agent listener could not be started. The reason is shown in red in the center of the bottom row of the status bar. Typical reasons are an unregistered license key, no output folder specified, or the port already being in use. |
| An agent has no queue. Jobs come from the controller. | The mode is "Agent". To process this PC's own queue, change "Mode" in Settings to "Standalone" or another mode. |
| Retrieving media info. N remaining | Media info for the added files is being read one file at a time. You can start once it finishes. Files that cannot be read are excluded from the count. They are checked again when encoding starts, and an item whose file still cannot be read is marked as failed. |
If the button is disabled and no reason is shown, the queue has no waiting or completed items. If only failed items remain, return them to waiting with "Retry Failed", and then start.
If encoding does not start after you click "Start Encoding" and select the targets, the reason is shown at the left end of the bottom row of the status bar.
| Reason shown | Action |
|---|---|
| There is a problem with the preset "X": (description of the problem) | The settings of a preset that applies to waiting items are inconsistent. Correct the preset in "Edit Presets". X is the preset name. |
| The output folder does not have enough free space: X left / 5.0 GB needed. Free up space before starting. | The free space in the output folder is below 5 GB. See 14.10. |
| No encoder is available. Download one from Tools > External Tools. | The encoding method is "GPU Encoding", and neither the GPU tools nor FFmpeg can be used. Get the external tools. |
| CPU encoding is unavailable. Get FFmpeg from Tools > External Tools. | The encoding method is "CPU Encoding", and FFmpeg is missing. Get FFmpeg. |
Failures are classified by cause. A summary is shown in the "Notes" column of the failed row.
When an item encoded on this PC fails, the summary also appears at the left end of the bottom row of the status bar at that moment. Failures of items encoded by an agent are not shown in the status bar.
The same summary is also recorded in the report file (report-YYYYMMDD.txt in the report folder) and the activity log (app-YYYYMMDD.log).
In the report file, a failed row shows the category name in the "Input" and "Output" columns and the summary at the end of the row.
| Summary | Report category | Cause | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cannot read the input file. It may be corrupted, or the container or codec may be unsupported. | Input corrupted | The file is corrupted, in an unsupported format, or contains no video. | Check its contents with "Media Info" on the right-click menu. If the file cannot be opened with "Play Source File" on the right-click menu, the file itself may have a problem. |
| Cannot write to the output folder. Check the path and the write permissions. | Not writable | The path does not exist, there is no write permission, or another program is using the file. | Check the path of the output folder and the write permissions. For a network drive, also check the connection. When the product runs as a service, it cannot access network drives mapped to a drive letter (such as Z:). |
| The output folder does not have enough free space. Free up space and try again. | Out of space | The drive of the output folder ran out of free space during encoding. | Free up space, and then retry the failed items. For how free space is checked, see 14.10. |
| External tools are missing. Download them from Tools > External Tools. | Tools missing | The encoder executable cannot be found. | Check the status in "Tools > External Tools", and get any tools that are not installed. |
| The encode request is invalid. Check the log for details. | Invalid request | The settings in the preset or in Adjust are inconsistent. | The specific reason is recorded in the row's log. Correct the setting in the Edit Presets window or in Adjust. |
| The encode succeeded, but the output could not be transferred to the controller. (followed by the reason) | Transfer failed | The output encoded on an agent could not be sent to the controller. The reason is shown in the second half of the summary (11.4.1). | The item is automatically returned to waiting and retried within the same run (up to 2 retries). If it happens repeatedly, check the controller PC, the network, and the free space of the output folder on the controller. |
| Stopped: no progress for N minutes. | Stalled | The encoder's progress did not change within the timeout (8.2.4). | The item is automatically returned to waiting and retried within the same run (up to 2 retries). If it happens repeatedly, check the row's log for the output just before the job was stopped. You can change the timeout under "Encoding" in Settings. |
| The encode failed. Check the log for details. | Failed | A failure that could not be classified. | The item is automatically returned to waiting and retried within the same run (up to 2 retries). If that does not solve the problem, check the row's log. |
"Input corrupted", "Not writable", "Out of space", "Tools missing", and "Invalid request" are not retried automatically, because repeating them does not change the result. "Transfer failed" is often caused by a temporary network interruption, so it is retried automatically in the same way as "Failed". "Stalled" is also retried automatically. When GPU encoding fails because of "GPU session limit", "GPU not supported", "Stalled", or a reason that cannot be classified, the item is processed again on the CPU before it is treated as failed. In this case, the reason is shown in the "Notes" column (14.4).
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The "Encoder" column shows CPU for every item | Under "Encoding" in Settings, check that "Encoding Method" is set to "GPU Encoding" and that the GPU you want to use is checked in the "GPU Encoding" list. If the list is empty, click "Rescan". Items are also processed on the CPU if the GPU tools (NVEncC / QSVEncC / VCEEncC) are not installed. |
| The status bar shows "The encoder chosen in the settings is unavailable, so CPU is used instead." | The tool for the GPU selected in the settings cannot be used. Check the installation status in "Tools > External Tools", and update the GPU driver. If the product switched to an encoder other than the CPU, that encoder's name (such as QSV) appears in place of CPU. |
| Only one GPU is used | If the status bar shows "The license allows N GPUs, so M GPUs are not used.", the license limit applies. Without a registered license key, one GPU can be used at a time. If you select more GPUs than the limit in the Settings window, "The license allows selecting N GPUs. The extra selections were cleared." appears. This limit does not apply when the mode is "Agent". |
| The status is "CPU Fallback" | The item meets a condition the GPU cannot handle, or GPU encoding failed, so it is being processed on the CPU. The reason is shown in the "Notes" column (see the table below). |
| The GPU is used, but processing is slow | Check the number of parallel jobs. On models whose GPU has only one encode engine, running jobs in parallel does not increase speed. If VE (the encode engine) is near 100% in the "GPU VD/3D/VE" column of the list, increasing the number of parallel jobs does not make encoding faster either. You can measure the optimal number of parallel jobs with "Benchmark" in Settings. |
| "Could not detect a GPU. Check the external tools and the driver." appears | "Rescan" in Settings did not find a GPU. The driver may be outdated, or the GPU tools may not be installed. Check the status of NVEncC / QSVEncC / VCEEncC in "Tools > External Tools". |
| After you get the external tools again, encoding fails with another GPU tool | NVEncC / QSVEncC / VCEEncC share the same DLLs in the tools folder. External tools are always downloaded as the latest version from the original source, so tools downloaded at different times can replace the shared DLLs. If a message such as "DLLs shared with NVEncC were replaced with files that have different contents" appears when you get a tool, get the tool named in the message again as well. |
In the table, NVENC and QSV stand for the type of GPU used (NVENC / QSV / VCE). The per-side limit message appears only when an NVIDIA GPU is used.
| Message | Meaning and action |
|---|---|
| NVENC failed, so the item is processed on the CPU: GPU session limit | The number of sessions the GPU can process at once was exceeded. If this happens often, lower the number of parallel jobs for the GPU under "Encoding" in Settings. |
| NVENC failed, so the item is processed on the CPU: GPU not supported | The GPU does not support the specified combination of codec, resolution, bit depth, and other settings. Update the GPU driver or review the preset. |
| NVENC failed, so the item is processed on the CPU: Stalled | GPU encoding made no progress within the stall timeout (8.2.4). GPU encoding was stopped, and the item is processed again on the CPU. If this happens often, update the GPU driver. |
| NVENC failed, so the item is processed on the CPU: Failed | GPU encoding failed for a reason that could not be classified. Check the GPU-side output in the row's log. |
| QSV cannot output HEVC / H.265. Processing on the CPU. | Output in the same format failed on the same GPU, so later items in that format are processed on the CPU from the start. When you restart this product, the GPU is tried again. Updating the driver may solve the problem. |
| NVENC cannot output VP9, so the item is processed on the CPU. | The GPU cannot output this format. Only Intel GPUs can output VP9 and MPEG-2. VP8, MPEG-4 Part 2, WMV 8, and Theora are always processed on the CPU. |
| The output resolution X exceeds the NVENC per-side limit N, so the item is processed on the CPU. | The resolution exceeds the per-side limit that NVIDIA GPUs can handle (4096 for H.264, 8192 for H.265 and AV1). If the settings keep the output resolution unchanged, the same message is shown for the input resolution. |
| Image subtitles cannot be written on the GPU to a container different from the input, so the item is processed on the CPU. | The settings keep image-based subtitles as a track in a container different from the input. To process on the GPU, make the output container the same as the input. |
| Not enough free slots for file split, so the item is retried without splitting. | GPU sessions ran out during file split. The item is being processed again on the GPU without splitting. From then on, until you restart this product, file split is not used on that GPU, and "Not enough free slots for file split on this GPU, so the item is processed without splitting." is shown. |
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The watch settings in the Settings window cannot be changed | Check the reason shown in red above "Watch Settings". If it says "Register a license key to use folder watch.", you need to register a license. If it says "This license does not allow folder watch.", your license does not include this feature. If the mode is "Agent", "An agent has no queue. Folder watch does not run." is shown. |
| "N watched folders" does not appear in the status bar | Folder watch is not running. Check that the mode is not "Agent", that a license is registered, and that "Enabled" is checked in that folder's row. |
| "Watch paused" appears in the status bar | Scanning of all watched folders is paused. Click "Resume Watch" in the status bar, or select "Resume Folder Watch" on the "Encode" menu (10.5). Watch remains paused after a restart. |
| Files placed in the folder are not imported | A file is not imported until all of the following conditions are met.
processed folder or an output folder, the activity log records "Not an import target:" with the number of files for each reason. For files whose contents could not be read, the log records "Watch: skipping because the file cannot be read yet:" followed by the file name. |
| The same file is not imported again | The path, size, and modification date of each imported file are recorded, and the same file is not imported again. If you remove an item from the queue before it is encoded (while it is waiting), the file is removed from the record and imported again at the next scan. A file with the same name is imported as a different file if its size or modification date has changed. A file copied in File Explorer keeps its modification date, so it is treated as the same file. If the activity log shows "Not an import target: already imported", this is the reason. To import a file that you put back, select "Encode > Clear Imported File Record" (10.2). To encode the same file again, add it to the queue manually, or right-click the completed row and choose "Encode". If the watched folder moves, recycles, or deletes source files and you want a file that you put back to be imported again, select "Re-import" (10.3.1). |
| The output folder and a watched folder cannot overlap | To prevent encoded output from being imported again, a watched folder and the folders above it cannot be specified as the output folder. Folders under a watched folder that includes subfolders cannot be specified either. Likewise, the output folder and the folders under it cannot be specified as watched folders. Specify a different location. |
For the complete list, see 11.6. The four most common causes are as follows.
| Cause | Action |
|---|---|
| Firewall | On the controller, allow inbound TCP connections to the listening port (the "Port" setting, 5555 by default). When the product is registered as a service, a rule named "NyXGridEncode Service" that allows inbound connections to this product is created automatically. |
| Auth token mismatch | Set the same value on the controller and the agents. |
| The agent listener on the controller is not open | The reason is shown in red in the center of the bottom row of the status bar on the controller. If no license key is registered, "Register a license key to use agents." appears; if neither the output folder in the main window nor the output folder of a watched folder is specified, "The agent listener cannot start. Specify an output folder." appears. If the listener cannot start for another reason, such as the port being in use, "Could not start the agent listener:" appears, followed by the reason. |
| The controller has not started encoding | Jobs are assigned only while encoding is running on the controller. |
For items that fail in distributed encoding, summaries such as the following are recorded in the report file and the activity log on the controller.
| Summary | Meaning and action |
|---|---|
| Could not receive the input. Check the network and the agent connection. | The agent failed while receiving the input file. Check the network connection. |
| Could not place the received output file. | The encoded result received from the agent could not be placed in the output folder of the controller. Check the write permissions and the free space of the output folder. |
| No encoder is available on the agent. | The agent has no external tools. On the agent PC, get them from "Tools > External Tools". |
| The agent could not process the job. | An unexpected error occurred on the agent. Check the activity log on the agent. |
For details on the settings and conditions, see 11.5.
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| "Wake" cannot be selected on the Node Info right-click menu | "Wake" is available only for disconnected agents whose MAC address is known. The controller has no saved MAC address for an agent that has never connected to it. Connect the agent to the controller once, or enter the address with "Set MAC Address" (11.5.3). "Wake" also cannot be selected when the license is below Pro or when the mode is neither "Controller + Encoder" nor "Controller Only". |
| A message containing "could not send a wake request" appears in the status bar or the activity log | Check the reason in the message and the network connection of the controller PC. |
| A wake request was sent, but the PC does not start | On the agent PC, check the Wake-on-LAN settings in the BIOS/UEFI and the NIC (11.5.1). If the PC does not start from the shut-down state, turn off Windows Fast Startup. A PC connected over Wi-Fi often cannot be started. Wake requests do not reach a PC on another subnet across a router. |
| The PC started, but it does not become "Connected" in Node Info | Check that this product is running on the agent PC. If the product is not registered as a Windows service, the agent does not connect until a user signs in and starts this product (12.1). |
| The MAC address changed (for example, after the NIC was replaced) | Connect the agent to the controller once, and it reports the new MAC address. A manually set MAC address takes priority over the reported address. If you set the address manually, enter the new address with "Set MAC Address", or clear the field to use the reported address. |
First, on the agent PC, open the "Mode" page in Settings and check the status shown below the auto shutdown settings.
| Cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Not available with the controller's license | Auto shutdown works only when the controller that the agent connects to has a Pro or higher license. |
| The controller version does not support auto shutdown | Use the same version of this product on the controller and the agent. |
| Not connected to the controller | The action does not run while the agent cannot connect to the controller. If the agent cannot connect, see 11.6. |
| Canceled until the PC restarts | If you click "Cancel" in the warning, auto shutdown does not run until the PC restarts. |
| The conditions for "Only when started by Wake-on-LAN" are not met | The PC qualifies only if the agent connects to the controller within the "Wake request to connection" time after the controller sends a wake request and within the "OS startup to connection" time after the OS starts (11.5.5). A PC that a user turned on, or a PC that takes a long time to start, may not qualify. If needed, increase these times or select "Always". |
| The queue has not finished | The action does not run while the controller has a waiting item that can be assigned to this agent, or while a job is being processed on the controller or on another agent. It also does not run while the controller is paused. |
| No jobs processed since startup | The action does not run if this agent has not received any job since this product started. Jobs canceled by Stop on the controller are counted. |
| Postponed because the PC is in use | When "Skip while in use" is on and the keyboard or mouse is used after the queue finishes, the action does not run until the set time has passed since the last input. When several users are signed in, input in any one session postpones the action. |
| Shutdown is blocked | With "Shut down", an app with unsaved documents can block the shutdown. In that case, the shutdown remains pending. On the agent PC, check which app is blocking the shutdown. |
| Shutdown cannot be requested | When this product runs as a service and more than one user is signed in, Windows does not accept a "Shut down" request. The activity log records "Auto shutdown: could not request shutdown:". Select "Force shut down" under "Action" (11.5.5). |
The agent's activity log records when the warning is canceled, when the action runs without a warning, and when the action switches to shutdown because sleep or hibernation is not available.
First, open the "Auto Run" page in Settings and check the status shown at the bottom of the auto shutdown group (8.5.1).
| Cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Not available with this license | A Standard or higher license is required. When the mode is "Agent", the auto shutdown settings for agents are used instead of this group (11.5.4). |
| Folder watch is running | The action does not run while an enabled watched folder exists and folder watch is not paused. Pause folder watch, or disable the watched folders. |
| The queue has not finished | The action does not run while there are waiting items or running jobs. It also does not run while encoding is running or paused. |
| No jobs processed since startup | The action does not run if no job has started since this product started. Jobs interrupted by Stop are counted. |
| Waiting for agents to disconnect | While agents are connected, the controller waits up to the "Agent disconnect wait limit". With a limit of 0, the controller waits until all agents disconnect. |
| Postponed because the PC is in use | When "Skip while in use" is on and the keyboard or mouse is used after the queue finishes, the action does not run until the set time has passed since the last input. |
| Canceled until the PC restarts | If you click "Cancel" in the warning, auto shutdown does not run until the PC restarts. |
| Shutdown is blocked | With "Shut down", an app with unsaved documents can block the shutdown. In that case, the shutdown remains pending. |
| Shutdown cannot be requested | When this product runs as a service and more than one user is signed in, Windows does not accept a "Shut down" request. The activity log records "Auto shutdown: could not request shutdown:". Select "Force shut down" under "Action". |
The activity log on this PC records when the action proceeds after the "Agent disconnect wait limit" passes, when the warning is canceled, and when the action runs without a warning.
If startup fails, "Could not start." or "An unhandled exception occurred." is displayed, and the details are recorded in logs\error.log.
The "Details:" part of the message shows the path of that file. The logs are stored in the following locations.
| Installation method | Log location |
|---|---|
| Installed with the installer | C:\ProgramData\NyXGridEncode\logs |
| Portable setup | The logs folder in the same folder as the executable (C:\ProgramData\NyXGridEncode\logs if that folder is not writable) |
If the product starts, you can also check the log location under "Log" in Settings.
| File | Contents | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| app-YYYYMMDD.log | Activity record of this product: startup and shutdown; encode start, completion, and failure; license status; folder watch imports; external tool downloads; and more. When a day's log reaches 64 MB, further entries for that day are skipped. | Retention setting (default: 30 days) |
| error.log | Unexpected errors. Check this file first if the product does not start. When the file exceeds 8 MB, it is moved to error.log.1 and a new file is started. | Latest 2 files |
| jobs\YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS_*.log | Job logs. Saved only when the job log retention under "Log" in Settings is set to a value other than 0 (8.8). | Retention setting (default: not saved) |
| report-YYYYMMDD.txt | Encoding report (one line per item). Saved in the report folder, not in logs. | Never deleted |
app-YYYYMMDD.log files and job logs older than the retention period are deleted when this product starts.
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Running items cannot be changed. | Settings made in Adjust cannot be applied to a running item. Wait until it finishes, or cancel the item. |
| There are no items to change. Running items and agent jobs cannot be changed. | All the selected items are either running or jobs received as an agent. Change presets and audio or subtitle tracks on waiting, completed, or failed items. Changing the preset of a completed or failed item returns it to waiting. |
| Items cannot be removed while encoding is running. | While encoding is running, items cannot be removed from the queue. Wait for the run to finish, or click "Stop / Pause", select "Stop", and then remove the items. Items cannot be removed while encoding is paused either. |
| Select exactly one item to view its log. Select exactly one item to view its media info. | The log, media info, and Adjust are available only when exactly one item is selected. |
| Tracks are still loading. Wait a moment and select again. | Analysis of the file has not finished. Wait until "Retrieving media info" disappears from the status bar. For a file whose media info cannot be read, this message keeps appearing even after "Retrieving media info" disappears. Check whether the file can be read with "Media Info" on the right-click menu. |
| The preset is set to discard subtitles. Change the preset. | Subtitle tracks cannot be selected with a preset that discards subtitles. Change how the preset handles subtitles. |
| This item has no audio tracks. This item has no subtitle tracks. | The video does not contain that type of track. |
| Select only items that are waiting. | You can move items and use "Prioritize" only on waiting items. Remove running, completed, and failed items from the selection. |
| Clear the column sort first. | Queue items cannot be moved while the list is sorted by a column header. Click the header of the sorted column until the list returns to the default order, and then move the items (3.2.2). |
| There is nothing to cancel. Select a running item. | Canceling an individual item works only on running items. |
| libVLC is missing. Download it from Tools > External Tools. | The Adjust window plays video with libVLC, so it cannot be opened without libVLC. Get libVLC from "Tools > External Tools". |
| The limit is N items, so M items could not be added. Registering a license raises the limit. | The queue has reached its item limit. The limit counts waiting and running items; completed and failed items are not included. Without a registered license key, the limit is 20 items. The same limit also applies to files imported by folder watch. |
| A trial license has already been used on this PC. Enter the key for a purchased license. | You tried to register a trial license key, but a different trial license has already been registered on this PC. Only one trial license can be registered on each PC. Register the key for a purchased license (13.6). |
| Add-ons cannot be added to a trial license. Register a purchased license, and then add the add-on. | The main license is a trial license, so add-on licenses cannot be added. Register a purchased license as the main license, and then register the add-on license key (13.4). |
| Add-ons cannot be added to this edition. Register a ProPlus license, and then add the add-on. | Add-on licenses can be added only to a ProPlus license. Register a ProPlus license as the main license, and then register the add-on license key (13.4). |
The free space in the output folder is checked when encoding starts and each time an item finishes encoding.
| Free space | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Under 15 GB | The status bar shows "The output folder is running low on free space: X left". Processing continues. |
| Under 5 GB | If free space is already below this when encoding starts, "The output folder does not have enough free space: X left / 5.0 GB needed. Free up space before starting." is shown and encoding does not start. If free space drops below this during a run, encoding is stopped, running items are also returned to waiting, and "The output folder does not have enough free space: X left / 5.0 GB needed. Encoding was stopped. Free up space before starting again." is shown. Partially written output files are deleted. The queue is kept as is, so after you free up space and click "Start Encoding", processing resumes from the waiting items. |
All output folders that the run writes to are checked. If you specify an output folder for each watched folder, those output folders are also checked, and the message shows the folder name. Locations whose free space cannot be retrieved (such as some network locations) are not checked.
The free space of the temp folders is also checked. For the temp folders, only a warning is shown when free space falls below 15 GB; processing does not stop.
| Target | Used by | When checked |
|---|---|---|
| App temp folder | Trimming and subtitle burn-in | Always checked. This applies to the drive that contains the temp folder in the data location (Appendix A). |
| System temp folder | File split | Checked when any GPU is set to use file split under "Encoding" in Settings. |
The warning is shown in a form such as "The app temp folder is running low on free space: X left. Trimming and subtitle burn-in may fail." If the two temp folders are on the same drive, they are reported together in one message.
If the problem persists, you can send an inquiry from "Help > Support".
When the inquiry has been sent, a reference number is shown. If it cannot be sent, the reason appears at the bottom of the window. "Information to Send" includes the OS (Windows version), the app version, and the display language. If a license is registered, the license ID is also filled in automatically and sent. The PC name and user name are not sent. You can enter up to 50 characters for the subject and the email address, and up to 963 characters for the details.
Include the following information in the details.
app-YYYYMMDD.log for that day. Records since the app started can also be selected and copied in "View > Log Viewer".Files cannot be sent from the inquiry window. Paste only the necessary log lines into the details. If you are asked for the full activity logs for an investigation, you can create a ZIP file with "Help > Save Diagnostics" (3.4.2). Submit the ZIP file as instructed.
Where settings, the queue, and logs are stored depends on the location of this product's executable.
| Executable location | Data location |
|---|---|
| Under C:\Program Files\ (installed with the installer) | C:\ProgramData\NyXGridEncode |
| Anywhere else (portable setup) | The same folder as the executable (C:\ProgramData\NyXGridEncode if that folder is not writable) |
| Location | Contents |
|---|---|
| config\settings.json | All settings and presets |
| config\queue.json | Queue contents. Kept after you exit this product. |
| config\watched.json | Record of files imported by folder watch. You can delete it with "Encode > Clear Imported File Record" (10.2). |
| config\nodestats.json | Job totals for each node (shown in parentheses in the "Running", "Completed", and "Failed" columns of Node Info), the MAC addresses reported by agents, and the "History" tab of the node details window (11.4) |
| config\license.* | License information, protected with a key unique to this PC. |
| config\trial-service-stopped.json | A record that the service was stopped because the trial license expired. It is used for the confirmation the next time the app window starts, and is deleted when the service is removed or the confirmation is no longer needed (13.6.1). |
| logs\ | Activity logs and error logs. Job logs are saved in logs\jobs. |
| report\ | Encoding reports (one text file per day) |
| temp\ | Temporary files for encoding. Files older than 24 hours are deleted at startup. |
| benchmark-temp\ preview-temp\ | Working folders for Benchmark and Adjust. Their contents are normally deleted after use. Any leftovers older than 24 hours are deleted at startup. |
| transfer\ | Where files received from the controller are placed temporarily when the product runs as an agent. Any remaining files are deleted when the product starts running as an agent. |
| tools\ | External tools. Only this location is always in the same folder as the executable (by default C:\Program Files\NyXGridEncode\tools when installed with the installer). |
| %TEMP%\NyXGridEncode-update\ | The installer downloaded by "Update Now". Only this location is in the per-user temporary folder. The previous file is deleted the next time you run "Update Now". |
config folder as is to carry over your settings, presets, and queue.
License information is protected with a key unique to each PC, so it cannot be used on the new PC even if you copy it. Register your license key again on the new PC (13.3).
External tools are not included in config, so get them on the new PC.The following extensions are treated as video files by "Add Folder", drag and drop, and folder watch. There are 44 in total.
| Category | Extensions |
|---|---|
| Major formats | .mp4 .mkv .avi .wmv .ts .m2ts .mov .flv .webm .mpg .mpeg .m4v .asf .rm .rmvb .3gp .vob |
| Legacy / recording devices | .divx .xvid .ogm .ogv .mts .m2t .tod .mod .dv .f4v .swf .mpe .m1v .m2v .dat .mxf .nsv .y4m .mk3d .3g2 .m4p .qt .amv .dvr-ms .wtv .trp .mpv |
Whether a file is actually a video is determined by FFmpeg. A file that cannot be read fails even if its extension matches. Files with extensions that are not on the list are ignored when folders are scanned and when files are dropped. The "Add Files" dialog shows files with the listed extensions by default. If you switch the file type to "All files (*.*)", you can also add files with extensions that are not on the list.
| Container | Video | Audio | Subtitle tracks |
|---|---|---|---|
| mp4 | H.265 / H.264 / AV1 / MPEG-4 / MPEG-2 | AAC / AC3 / E-AC3 / MP3 / ALAC / Opus | Yes |
| mkv | All | All | Yes |
| webm | VP9 / VP8 / AV1 | Opus / Vorbis | Yes |
| mov | H.265 / H.264 / MPEG-4 | AAC / ALAC / PCM | Yes |
| avi | MPEG-4 / MPEG-2 / WMV 8 | MP3 / AC3 / PCM | No |
| ts | MPEG-2 / H.264 / H.265 | AAC / AC3 / E-AC3 / MP2 | No |
Audio "Stream Copy" can be selected for any container, but encoding fails if the original audio format is not supported by the output container. When subtitle tracks are kept, they are converted to mov_text for mp4 and mov and to WebVTT for webm, and they are stored in their original format for mkv. Subtitle burn-in is available even for containers marked "No" for subtitle tracks.

=. Separate multiple names with commas; they cannot be separated with spaces.--force.--service-install fails if the required external tool (FFmpeg) is not installed. When the mode is not "Agent", registering a new service and --service-restart require a Standard or higher license (12.2). To start the service after registering it, run --service-start.--help text is shown in a window. It is not written to the Command Prompt.Service operations and external tool downloads do not display a window. They return the result as an exit code and record it in the activity log.
| Exit code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | Success |
| 1 | Failure. The reason is recorded in the activity log. |
| 2 | The arguments could not be read. The reason and the usage are shown in a window. |
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Queue | The list of items waiting to be encoded. The list in the main window is the queue. |
| Preset | A named set of settings such as resolution, bitrate, audio, and subtitles. |
| External tools | Programs used for encoding, such as FFmpeg and NVEncC. They are not included with this product, so you download the latest version from the original source through "Tools > External Tools". |
| Container | The format that holds video, audio, and subtitles, such as mp4 or mkv. It corresponds to the file extension. |
| Codec | The method used to compress video or audio, such as H.265 / H.264 / AV1. |
| Bitrate | The amount of data per second. A higher value gives higher quality and a larger file size. |
| CRF / CQP | A method that specifies quality instead of bitrate. A lower number means higher quality. |
| Filler data | In CBR, data that fills the bitrate the video did not use. It is skipped during playback and does not affect quality. |
| Stream copy | Copying a stream as is without re-encoding. It is fast, but fails if the container does not support the stream. |
| Crop | Cutting off the edges of the video. Used to remove black bars. |
| Trim | Cutting out part of a video in time. You specify a start and an end, and only that part is encoded. |
| Burn-in (hardsub) | Drawing subtitles directly onto the video. They cannot be removed afterward. |
| Loudness normalization | Adjusting the volume to a consistent reference level. |
| CPU fallback | Switching to the CPU when the settings cannot be processed on the GPU or when GPU encoding fails. |
| Controller / agent | In distributed encoding, the side that assigns jobs and the side that receives them. |
| Agent listener | The controller feature that waits for connections from agents. It starts when the mode is "Controller + Encoder" or "Controller Only". A license that allows agents is required. |
| Performance ratio | The per-item processing speed of a PC relative to the controller, which is set to 100. |
| Node | One PC taking part in distributed encoding. |
| Credentials | The user name and password used to access a shared folder. You specify them for each shared path in the shared path list. |
| Wake-on-LAN | A method that starts a powered-off PC by sending a wake request (magic packet) over the LAN. The BIOS/UEFI and the NIC of the PC must support it and have it enabled (11.5). |
| Magic packet | The data sent as a Wake-on-LAN wake request. It contains the MAC address of the PC to start. |
| MAC address | An identifier assigned to each NIC. Wake-on-LAN uses it to specify the PC to start. |
| Auto shutdown | A function that shuts down, puts to sleep, or hibernates a PC after the queue finishes. On an agent PC, the action runs after the controller's queue finishes (11.5.4). |
| Stall | A state in which encoding progress does not change within the configured timeout (8.2.4). |
| Trial license | A license that provides the same features as Pro for a limited period. You apply for it on the official website. The trial period starts when the license key is issued, and after it expires, this product runs within the free limits (13.6). |
